Hi.
Most highly populated areas(durban, capetown, pretoria, johannesburg) are having issues with latency due to the Telkom upgrade.

Yep

There is another thread on this, since the 2mb "upgrades". I cant use my line anymore for gaming

Just take a quick peek at the List of congested exchanges thread and you'll see that you're not the only one!
My issues started on 3rd of Oct in Stellenbosch, which was around the time at which Telkom upgraded their 384kbps users to 1Mbps.

Thanx. yep its sad coz there is really nothing we can do but wait for telkom to catch a wake up and fix it.

Basically my issues started around the 3rd of Oct as well. Stable smooth connection during the day but between 7pm~1am it is exhibiting the behavior of a flat-lining exchange.

My Latency climbs from 12ms in the day to the far side of the router to a average of 300ms to the far side of the router with periods of 1000~2000ms spiking/packetloss. All of this between 7pm-1am.

I basically had a techie tell me the exchange is overloaded, but his 'boss' doesn't believe him.

Hey they only work during the day so by the time they check the next morning voila back to normal....

Honeydew exchange problems

Having latency problems since yesterday, don't think this has anything to do with upgrades/congestion though, as I had no problems up until late last night. My exchange (Honeydew) is enable for 10mbs and up until last night I was achieving speeds close to this with a ping of around 10-15ms. Had a huge storm last night and the exchange is prone to getting struct.

Just wanted to check if anyone else on the exchange is having similar problems. I logged a fault on the line and Telkom is usually snappy with a response in the area (touch wood) hoping they will have a technician here by tomorrow.

Cape Town, Durbanville area, upgraded from 384k to 1Mbps but really - was pretty good on both Axxess capped and Afrihost uncapped (with IS), has been worse since MTN upgrade overall, but since last night the latency is really really bad!! That and at times the actual transfer rate is virtually non existent! And this counts for both my uncapped and capped accounts! So not an ISP issue but you guessed it, Telkom...

I'm also in Rondebosch area. Last night my ping was like 800ms to local sites. To think I was actually excited about the line upgrades. I'm cancelling my line within the next two weeks if this doesn't get resolved. Only reason I have ADSL is for gaming, will be better off with a 3g connection.

Had a feeling the recent upgrade had something to do with the insane increase in latency and in general messed up line speeds of late!

I can't believe they actually went ahead with the upgrades knowing this would happen. They just went and made everyone's connection useless. And they probably don't have any plans to relieve congestion.

WTF is gonna happen now??? :(

I'm in Kuilsriver btw Northern suburbs probably also congested...

I predicted this would happen in a previous post and my crystal ball was not even clean at the time.

Muizenberg exchange has now also gone for a ball of *****.

I am on a capped 4/6Mbps account and feel strongly that all these low end 1Meg(old 384k) and 2Meg UNCAPPED lines should NOT share resources at the exchange level. i.e. uncapped should have a much higher contention ratio as apposed to Capped.

I have tried all ISP trial accounts in the last month and it is not Shaping/Throttling done by ISP but but the exchange - in my case.

Plugg on NZBSA last night gave ave. 200k whereas Telkom on same NZB gave 85k - before OCT I got 520k.
Pings are horrid - from 19mS before to 685mS last night.

I think it is gonna be a long time before we close to pre-October times

Why is it that europe america japan china south korea doesnt have these issues? but we sit with congested exchanges in my case for over 150 days. Does anyone remember when we ran out of electrical supply a few years back, when loadshedding was the new normal. This is exactly like that.... Who to blame......

Is there anything we can do here? I have TERRIBLE pings from 5pm to about 11pm on my line, which is not sorted out by changing ISP's.
Would downgrading to a slower sync speed help with the latency? THe internet is virtually unusable after hours...wtf.
