The issue is deeper. For some reason last night from 00:15 to just after 02:15 it went down. This is strangely consistent with loadshedding yet it was the tower near me that went off. It always goes off with loadshedding yet this time we didn't have loadshedding so it's a mystery why it goes down when a surrounding area has loadshedding. This wouldn't be an issue with their normal packages as there's both 3G and Vodacom fallback but on LTE only it causes havoc and there's nothing Cell C can do as their network is simply too unreliable to fix.

I seriously need an ETA on that MTN migration but it will probably be when this is no more. Alternatively my only other option is a proper router with antenna. They didn't think this out properly. If someone only has one or two towers to connect to and they go down they are just out of luck. There should be some kind of fallback even if it's only 500kbps.

That's contract. Cell C costs me R100 a month and things are going to change tremendously in the next year. It's foolish to get locked into a contract that will be expensive in next to no time.

I have a sim on it, during loadshedding it died but the mtn towers are up here. I have even tried forcing bands to mtns 900 band and no luck. Have not tried PCI locking yet. Is roaming location based? I bought the sim cos I would like to take it along on holiday and as a backup for when my router battery dies but if mtn roaming doesnt work its pointless.

Can confirm the KZN part. I'm in Southbroom, we roam on MTN permanently here. Speeds are slow (5Mbps) but it stays on during load shedding.

Yeah visited parents in Uvongo a couple of times and the tower is just across the street. Speeds are like 10-12Mbps max but stays on during loadshedding. MTN sim on the exact same tower does like 60Mbps. I think MTN or Cellc intentionally cap Cellc users when they roam on MTN. There was no discrimination when it came to which data was being used though so my home connecta sim was maxing at 10Mbps while a prepaid sim with more expensive 30 day bundle was getting about the same speeds.

Cellc obviously denies this but I proved it here

Home Connecta Flexi is affordable but if you roaming on MTN you might actually be worse off compared to their own towers.

My grandmother is much faster than CellC and she has been dead for 28 years

Where I stay in Centurion I have at least x 3 Cellc towers nearby but the speeds are poor overall.

3-7Mbps max if I'm lucky.

Mtn throttles cellc users on the roaming agreement, so the cellc agent is correct they don't throttle as the throttling is not done by cellc

I wonder if MTN does it at a tower level or where exactly.

This means when Cellc has finally migrated all their sites to MTN their network will be garbage... Such a pity I guess the lte deals are just too good to be true and MTN won't allow their clients to slow the towers down.

MTN is the fastest network in SA so they won't allow that.

I can confirm the data rollover worked for both Anytime & Night data - an extra 30 days.

I wasn't sure how much airtime to load, so bought a R150 & R50 airtime voucher.

Loaded the R50 in a spare smartphone (to my Home Connecta SIM) & at first used USSD *147# to try the rollovers, via My Account.

The system confirmed both would be done but after I'd put the SIM back into the router & checked via the app on my main phone, expiry date was still 2 or so days away.

Then tried data rollover via the app & it worked ; see screenshot for one of the two options.

I don't know what their system's done with it but when I checked my data balances in the app just now, the airtime balance was down to 19c !!

The R50 has simply disappeared & it's not as if I was using cellular data on my 2nd SIM recently, without having previously moved enough across from the main Cell C Connecta SIM.

Therefore, no reason at all for airtime to have been used up or taken.

As it so happens, ordered an MTN SIM through Afrihost mid-morning, so won't be playing these excess airtime top-up games with Cell C any longer - just using up the remaining anytime & night data, and then they can re-provision these 2 SIM numbers, whenever ...

Warning to others to watch out for this practice of theirs.
Had to be a reason for them cutting recharge validity from 60 days to 30, and now I know why.

Try putting the SIM in a phone to check the balance.

Did so, and after going through the process to get to airtime balance via USSD code *147#, it still shows 19c.

Quite annoying, mostly because they give all sorts of additional, nonsensical facts in that Rollover T's and C's pdf, but leave out things like the minimum amount one can recharge with to keep data going for another 30 days, and that they'll swallow up that recharged amount after X number of days after the recharge.
