Hey guys,
if I wanted to register a domain and get hosting for a blog style site which I can configure and administer myself. Which sort of packages should I look for and from who ?

Are you going to use Wordpress? If yes, then look for a low end package with PHP/MySQL support. You then have to decide whether you want to host locally or internationally (which is cheaper).

BTW: Have a look at our leading article tonight at 00:00 - we did a basic hosting comparison which you may find of value...

Can a mod please move this to the correct forum!

To answer your question, it depends entirely on what you are wanting to achieve. Example do you want the blog to be fast for South Africans or international users, what is your budget.

You can host in SA for fast user experience but at a higher price, or host overseas for cheaper and with lots of bandwidth etc, even free if you want check my sig.

Your choice in SA I'd recommend afrihost.com they have some good hosting packages.

Hi rjuch,

I have sent you a PM with our details, as well as a solution. I look forward to doing business with you!

lol, thanks for the help guys ... Im new to this and Im looking into it for my girl friend ... I know nothing about building blogs ... where do I find this article ?

Hi rjuch

I am not sure you should be looking at setting up a wordpress site/blog as the first step. There are blogging platforms like Blogger.com and Wordpress.com where you can go and sign up for an account and start blogging today, no techy skills needed.

A friend has built their business using a Blogger blog, which you can customise and use your own domain etc. Why add all the hastle of maintaining a Wordpress install at the start.

Later if you do set up a Wordpress install of your own you can import everything from the Wordpress.com blog anyway.

can I register a domain and link my domain to this site on a blogging site ?

you have to pay if you want to do use wordpress nameservers. blogger is free.
but wordpress give you the software so you can host it yourself whereas blogger doesn't.
instructions are on the blogger site.

personally, i prefer wordpress - better skins and plugins.

If you are happy to pay R22 per month for a hosting plan - then you should consider hosting with us - see signature for links.

You can host wordpress and install it via fantastico very easily.

I tried to not "bzzz" around on this post but couldn't help my self. :)

Hope the info helps.

Also adding my vote for WordPress, it's definitely the way to go... The plugins are great; regardless of what you want to do, someone has probably made a plugin for it :) Especially recommended are plugins to control spam messages (*so annoying*). Customising themes can be a bit tricky if you don't have a bit of CSS experience, but there are loads of ready-made templates that would be good for starting out. Good luck! :)
