How does one immigrate to London?

Wasn't there something about dual-citizenship being looked at by the SA parliament a while back... might be mistaken though...

That would only affect his SA citizenship. You had to apply for permission to use a foreign passport in addition to an SA one etc. but I think they've now done away with that, as long as you enter and leave SA on an SA passport its not an issue.

Marry a UK woman or man dependant on your preference! You get one years "leave to remain in the UK" and after this you can then apply to stay permanently. Then finally after four more years you can apply for naturalisation (you'll need to sing God save the Queen once and know the capital of the UK and possibly your name) then (if granted) you can then apply for a UK Passport.

You'll also need to understand or accept:

1. Why it is 10 degrees colder outside of the house than it is in your freezer! AKA Winter/Autumn/Spring
2. Why weather forecasts saying fine and sunny means it will rain! AKA Summer - Winter Inclusive.
2a. When it rains on a Monday you will instinctively know it'll still be raining on Friday (the same or next week).
3. Why the immigration officer at Heathrow speaks only broken English.
4. Why your English is better than the inhabitants of the UK south of the River Thames!
4a. Why your English is better 70% of the rest of the UK population.
5. Why satellite TV has ten times as many channels as DSTV but even less worth viewing!
6. Why sausages have a warning "may contain meat" just in case!
7. Why Lamb/Beef/Pork etc., is clearly labeled otherwise you'll not know what you are supposed to be eating due to the lack of any resemblance of flavour!
8. That you are so happy that you are not the potential victim of gun crime but get knifed instead!
9. Suffer with Seasonal Adjustment Disorder (SAD) October - May Inclusive.
10. Buy Simba Potato Chips in a South African Store at ten times cost price!
11. Why the TV Weather Forecast says "Heatwave" at 24C...
12. Why London is dark by 4.30pm in Winter!
13 Why you left SA in the first place?
14 Why non one greets you in the street unless it's with a rude gesture!
15 Why the trains fail to run anywhere near schedule in Summer because of "buckled lines"!
16. Why the trains fail to run anywhere near schedule in Autumn because of "a leaf or two on the line"!
17. Why the trains fail to run anywhere near schedule in Winter because of " Snow or Ice on the line"
18. Why the trains fail to run anywhere near schedule in Spring because of "a strike"!
19. Why you don't have a Christmas Tree at the office just in case it should offend someone working for another company 30 miles away!
20. Having to "Roadworthy" your car (MOT) every year once it is three years old.
21. You cars trip meter is in miles but the road signs are metric!
22. You get your electricity from the gas company!
23. Why there simply will not be a final end to this list!

I miss the UK - Not!

hey guys (and gals)

How does one immigrate to the uk, especially now with the strict visas etc etc etc

I am currently studying to become a chartered accountant.

Already have good job prospects and training contract, but just want to know how (especially chartered accountants) mmanaged to emmigrate to the uk.

Thanx in advanced for replies

Its impossible to immigrate from SA to the UK if you are in SA. :D

Look in the AcountancySA magazine, always plenty of ads for companies that look for CA(SA)'s to go overseas but you need to be finished with studying and preferrably have some experience under your belt. I think

You'll also need to understand or accept:

1. Why it is 10 degrees colder outside of the house than it is in your freezer! AKA Winter/Autumn/Spring
If you moved to the Outer Hebrides with all the other Scottish farmers.. sure

2. Why weather forecasts saying fine and sunny means it will rain! AKA Summer - Winter Inclusive.
It will RAIN.. for 5 minutes every day at 3am - youre awake so you care :D

2a. When it rains on a Monday you will instinctively know it'll still be raining on Friday (the same or next week).

3. Why the immigration officer at Heathrow speaks only broken English.
Yeah, The security guards from SA should brush up on there language skills

4. Why your English is better than the inhabitants of the UK south of the River Thames!
4a. Why your English is better 70% of the rest of the UK population.
Depends if you rule out PROGRESS in languages - you seem to have ruled out North of the Thames. I could say the same about JHB as there are 80% non-english speaking people there too.

5. Why satellite TV has ten times as many channels as DSTV but even less worth viewing!
Sorry they dont broadcast Pron for you.. :D

6. Why sausages have a warning "may contain meat" just in case!
7. Why Lamb/Beef/Pork etc., is clearly labeled otherwise you'll not know what you are supposed to be eating due to the lack of any resemblance of flavour!
LMAO!!!!!! so Bovine/Swine growth hormones are now flavouring? :D Why not get some modern stuff called 'Spices'

8. That you are so happy that you are not the potential victim of gun crime but get knifed instead!
Thats is a worry... all 12 cases last year have everyone in a panic

9. Suffer with Seasonal Adjustment Disorder (SAD) October - May Inclusive.
This is horrible... but it depends on personal preferences. I prefer winter times.

10. Buy Simba Potato Chips in a South African Store at ten times cost price!
People earn 10 times the salaries.. go as Telkom about the Scale of Economies

11. Why the TV Weather Forecast says "Heatwave" at 24C...
Dont know where you were..

12. Why London is dark by 4.30pm in Winter!
Actually dusk at 3.30pm - but you missed summer when it gets dark at 11pm

13 Why you left SA in the first place?
Cos I could

14 Why non one greets you in the street unless it's with a rude gesture!
Again... dont know where you were.. in some scaly part of London

LOL! thats the price you pay for using PUBLIC TRANSPORT. You failed to mention when the trains dont run, there is a bus service from the station in question.

19. Why you don't have a Christmas Tree at the office just in case it should offend someone working for another company 30 miles away!
Utter K@K

20. Having to "Roadworthy" your car (MOT) every year once it is three years old.
Is this a bad idea?

21. You cars trip meter is in miles but the road signs are metric!
Utter Horse ****

22. You get your electricity from the gas company!
your GAS company is called an ENERGY PROVIDER. The sell Electricity and GAS - ENERGY!

23. Why there simply will not be a final end to this list!
True.. there will always be a moaner

I miss the UK - Not!
I am surprised you dont miss the UK. You complain about everything much like a true British Person does.

LMAO pretty much accurate however there are a few glaring errors. Car trip meter is in miles. Road signs are not metric. What's wrong with having to roadworthy your vehicle once a year? It keeps piles of junk off the road (In SA this would keep taxis off the road... ish).I've never worked for a company where you are not allowed to celebrate Xmas with a tree in the office. London is not the only place that's dark at 4:30 pm in winter, most of northern Europe is...

How long did you live in the U.K?

I am surprised you dont miss the UK. You complain about everything much like a true British Person does.

Yes I probably do, my first 50 years there were the worst! :p

You equally brighten the chronic situation in the UK much like any home-missing South African! :D

Think of it like "I'm just there for the money" much like someone on an oil rig!

Tier 2: A company sponsors you to work in the UK.
One other requirement is that the company must have made an effort to find someone local. At the moment they're still quite lax on this, the requirement isn't very strict and companies typically just pretend they couldn't find someone local, i.e. they make up some reason not to hire any local people who come for an interview. Difficult to police really.

Perhaps I didn't give it time, I was only there 50 years before jumping ship (actually a plane at Heathrow Airport which is by far the nicest part of the UK)! :D

Agreed not all road signs are metric. There are quite a few though and it's just as confusing when you order a glass of wine in metric for your wife but pint of beer for yourself!

I would have agreed on the road worthy once each year until they dropped the rule where the garage that failed a vehicle was not permitted to repair it. It's funny how many obscure (and expensive) faults now turn up!

You'd be surprised at the Christmas tree "rules"... Although this is probably seen more in larger companies; I actually worked at a large broadcasting organisation that had a prayer room for Muslims but no chapel for Christians!

Although my list was intended to be funny, it is nevertheless based on fact! I thought it might bring the odd comment from someone, but in the case of Ricard he seems not to be so much defending the UK but more convincing himself he did the right thing in moving there! A little like whistling in the dark to keep ones spirits up! Most odd his comment on TV content?

I left the UK (my country of birth) five years ago and I miss the following:
1. An Indian Take-away in every town - I've mastered my curry making skills so it's no longer a problem!
2. Holidays in South Africa - Duh? I live here now!
List ends!

The grass is always greener on the other side. In the case of the UK it is simply due to rain! :p

Ok, then in that case is there any way to lose your South African citizenship? :p

Yup. Join the British army. You'll be given a choice to revoke your citizenship or face arrest and imprisonment as a foreign mercenary at any time in the future you should step foot back on South African soil.

What a whinger. You must be fitting in to SA very well! :D

Go over for a visit, while there go for job interviews. You will get companies that will sponsor you.

My boet (not a CA) got a couple of offers within a few days and he picked the best one.

This does happen, but its actually quite rare. 90% of companies wont even talk to you if dont already have persmission to work there.

I have been living in UK(London) for 2 years. I travel often to Newcastle and Manchester on business. 3 months ago, I got Tier 1 extension for a further 3 years. At this time there is no way that I will go back to SA, other than to visit family. I wont go just for a holiday. For holiday's Ill go to the Med, or the USA etc..

I think its different for everyone. If you are unhappy in SA, travel. Maybe things are better for you elsewhere. Unless you actually travel, you will never know. You may even find that SA is where you want to stay. But do travel. No harm in working in the UK/Canada/USA/Aus/NZ for a few years and then going back to SA. Or even settling in of those countries.

The important thing to realize is that all countries have their own challenges. There is always something better and something worse elsewhere.

Not so much whinger as such (although being British it comes naturally of course!) just pointing out that for a sack load of pounds you have to sacrifice rather a lot!

Looks like all you really have to sacrifice is eternally blue skies!

I'm unconcerned. I prefer winter anyway. Summer in Europe is just odd, and sixteen hours of sunlight per day is way too much.

From what I gather from relatives there the weather is terrible! But the pound talks, so I guess one would have to manage.:D

I dont think the weather is that bad. Not in the South-East anyway. The image people have of UK weather more accuratly reflects Scotland than South East England.I thought we just had a good summer. 2 Weeks on holiday on the Sussex coast was great.

I actually prefer this weather to Joburg. Joburg is dry. Horrible. I havent had sinus headaches for 2 years. Anyway, the buildings, shopping centers, underground and even the busses all have heating and if its cold, put on a jacket.
