I think I went wrong on the webpage one. It was so badly worded I didn't bother to read properly.

Disagree. Switch lets devices connect to a network. Router allows for "routing" of IP traffic between networks.

Well if I want to connect the network upstairs to ours I'd run a ethernet cable between our switch and theirs. If they phrased it to route traffic to the internet then I'd have chosen router.

Then again networking isn't my specialty. So who knows.
