Well if I want to connect the network upstairs to ours I'd run a ethernet cable between our switch and theirs. If they phrased it to route traffic to the internet then I'd have chosen router.
Then again networking isn't my specialty. So who knows.

I went with #2 switch. Still think it's the better choice.
Yes, there's one that is closer to reality than others, but none are entirely accurate.
Question 2 and then 10 for me doesn't make any sense.
