I'm in the same situation. Have you ordered the new gen 8? I haven't committed yet but I'm very close to going to the raspberry pi route and setting up and old computer with my hard drives as a NAS. I'm still trying to figure out whether my plan would work though.

The plan is:
* Raspberry pi runs Openelec / OSMC with sickbeard, sabnzbd and couchpotato;
* Raspberry pi downloads overnight and extracts to "completed" folder on micro SD;
* All shows are actually stored on NAS on old computer - sickbeard on Raspberry pi points to NAS for storage locations;
* Whenever I turn on NAS to watch shows, sickbeard on Raspberry pi runs post script to move items from "completed" folder on SD to show folder on NAS.

It's this last step I'm trying to figure out...

sounds like way too much effort and hassle. I also fiddled around with that a while back but decided I needed something that just worked and didnt give me issues.

yeah i ordered the HP gen8, why you ask?

At least I got a stick of ram I can use in the gen 8 which is awesome :)

How you controlling everything? You got a media player connected to the tv? Roku?

Stupid question but who has a gen 8 with windows 7 installed? I tried to install last night using the F10 boot option but it doesn't recognize a windows 7 home premium iso as a valid install image... ?

Edit. Windows 7 not possible unless you go the virtual server management route. Which with 2gb or ram isn't gonna happen.

How many of you are running your servers with ECC RAM?

Is it necessary?

Unless you're running mission-critical stuff it's probably not worth the premium. If you have the money then sure, it's extra peace of mind.

As I remember it, unless the M/B is specifically designed to utilise the features of ECC RAM (e.g. heavy-duty servers) one is wasting money.

That is wrong information. I am running Windows 7 on a Gen 8 Microserver, no problems whatsoever.

Have all the generations from N36L to Gen8. Only hit a small snag with Windows 10 on N40L. Had to update firmware for NIC as it showed cable disconnected.

The NIC problem was also present in Windows 8, but a BIOS updates sorts it out.

Sorry bud, I just never had issue or don't remember having one. It's been a little while since I've installed it, so let me try and go back and see if I had any special process. I'll come back with some info shortly.

Also, in what configuration are you planning on running the unit? HDD wise?

Ok cool thanks for getting back to me.

At the moment I have the raid controller enabled but I'm not actually going to be using raid which makes me think I should just disable it and use the standard sata controller.

I have a 250gb which I will use as the os drive then two 1tb drives and another 1.5tb drive. Bit of a mix and match but it does the job I guess :)

One thing I did notice is that perhaps I should t use the intelligence provisioning function? I could boot direct off the flash drive with windows 7? I did try that but for some reason couldn't get it to boot :(

Any help would be appreciated.

OK a few basics. If you're going to be using the built-in Raid controller, you must load the driver during the setup process.

Also, use the intelligent provisioning function prior to that to configure the Raid array. If you don't need raid, don't go that route. If you do, make sure drives over 2Tb are GPT so that you can see the full volume size.

I have done installs on both Raid and non-raid. No actual issues. Just follow the basics, primarily the basics relating to drivers during setup and the formatting/configuration of the drives.

With Gen8 it is highly recommended to get your drivers / BIOS / firmwares organised beforehand. For 64-bit windows installation, use the drivers for Server 2012 R2.

Also, be sure to register your server on the HP website as some downloads (BIOS) will require it.

And then lastly a little Gem of a tip.

Plug in network cable
Boot it up and press f10 and update your firmware of your micro server and this will Most prob fix a lot of problems..

Hi

Thanks so much for getting back to me.

Im not using a RAID setup at the moment even though I do have multiple drives. I have disabled the RAID controller and just going with the standard SATA controller for know. I seem to have finally made some head way and managed to create a usb with windows SP1, which is bootable.

I got that to boot and I am proceeding with the install on my OS drive (only one plugged in at the moment)

Going to go through all those resources. Just to confirm one thing here,

For 64-bit windows installation, use the drivers for Server 2012 R2

Is that right? Im sure I read somewhere that I need to use Server 2008 drivers?

I wasn't aware you were having issues with creating the USB installation source.
The best tool at the moment for that is RUFUS. https://rufus.akeo.ie

Keep it in your arsenal.
