HSDPA Speed Tests/Review

We've seen this "my old 3G card was faster than my fancy new HSDPA card" a few times on the forum.

Let me check with engineering but I'm beginning to wonder if there is a set of circumstances where this can be explained, for example if you're in a interference prone area that HSDPA might be running at a lower coding scheme than 3G would have.

Right now this is pure speculation on my part, so let me check with the experts.

And of course you don't have your old 3G card to do a back to back.....

Uplink should be 128K.

In terms of downlink; in Midrand today I was consistently getting 1.6Mb/s.....

Aaah so it was you who was hogging all the bandwith in Midrand today...

I couldn't get better than 440kbps, and I'm two blocks away from you at Vodaworld...

BTW: downlink stop is still happening, but no disconnects, and the throughput is still bad - well bad for HSDPA, but acceptable if you are on 3G I suppose...

Don't get too excited... the process takes forever, and that's before some dimwit complains about the radiation that the tower emmits and will destory their plants, and the kids will turn out like Bart Simpson etc - these are the same dimwits who use microwave ovens, watch TV and complain that the cellphone reception is poor - gotta love human nature!

But good luck anyway, I offered my property about 5 years ago, it's still going through the whole EIA study phase, and then we have to wait and see if there are any further objections... from the dimwit that is!
 
Few people realise the biggest challenge in building a cellular network is getting the property agreements.

Constantia was discussed on the forum a while ago; one set of residents blocked the construction of masts (disguised as pine trees) while another set of residents (in the same area) formed a pressure group to try and force the networks to improve coverage.

And they all belong to the same residents association....

left office where i was getting dismal figures... at home now, in ruimsig, with like only 1 bar of reception getting 1.1mbit... so at least i know its not my card or setup.
my office is just above randburg waterfront... maybe as you say something weird on the go there... maybe sum kids on p2p???? :)

It just shows how complex mobile wireless data actually is, with so many parameters that can affect the final throughput....

I sometimes wonder if we don't need some of those miracle ingredients our minister of health promotes..., maybe some garlic wrapped around your data card will keep the gremlins away...

Sitting at home where there in no 3g/HSDPA but with my antenna from my upstairs room i get a 3g 1 bar - 0 bar signal...here are results ( not bad at all)

Anyone out there in Cape Town (Brackenfell, Parow, Bellville) that uses HSDPA that can post some speed tests please?

I want to get a HSDPA card but first want to know what speeds I will get.

V3g, is there any other way I can get hold of a card for testing pusposes. Maybe on a "hire" agreement or something.

Anything from 600kb/s to about 1.2Mb/s. I'm not in official 3G coverage.

Might be out of town next week but can do the weekend.
