I agree, the drop is too radical to be just congestion and the engineering teams are working with the vendors to understand this situation and find a quick resolution.

Some software upgrades were tested last night and should roll out over the next 2 to 3 days.

Not being funny here, but do Siemens have to change base-station firmware|software? - everytime they change something, something goes horribly wrong for customers...maybe Siemens could follow the fundamentals of s/w development and test their changes on a test system that is not the production system...maybe the SLA that Vodacom has with Siemens needs changing - such that Siemens has to pay Vodacom large amounts of money everytime Siemens messes up & affects customers...

We do have test systems and so does Siemens. The Siemens kit is also the most used 3G/HSDPA kit in the world, but where I think we are unique is in the size and roll-out rate of the Vodacom network. I think it's now the 3rd largest Vodafone network in the world, so we probably see load related issues not easily seen anywhere else.

These are the joys of early adoption. I remember posting around the HSDPA launch date that we probably will have teething problems and in reality it's been quite an easy time till now.

With the free swap-out, the take-up accelerated tremendously, so we probably hit these snags earlier than the other networks. I don't know of any other network that went the free swap-out route.

Vodacom Speed Test

Download Speed: 340 kbps (42.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 27 kbps (3.4 KB/sec transfer rate)

thats pretty much 3G speed.
I'm in Vanderbijl Park this weekend.
At my house in Kempton its worse.
Every now and then I'll get some awesome d/l speeds if this keeps up I'm switching back to 3G dnt see why I pay extra on a HSDPA profile but get speeds like that. I have been logging calls often and speak to a guy named Yusef (Radio Tech in charge of my area, Kempton Park) and Siemens have had the tower up for almost a year but havent handed it over to vodacom yet as they are having erratic problems with it (I know all about it :( ).
Now an interesting fact is ATNS (Air Traffic control) is not far from me. I can see the ATNS radar tower and the Voda tower from my house and everytime there is air traffic my connection goes for a loop and i know in Centurion there is a large radar instalation and we know about there problems. Might be something might be nothing thought I would mention it neway.

Now for something possitive.

I was one of the early adopters of 3G tech (got my card in feb 2005) and now cant live without the conveniance of mobile data and having more speed makes it more effective. Quicker mail d/l's and less time spent at clients waiting for downloads makes me more produtive as a consultant. Mobile data has improved my work environment. So thanks to Voda but plz plz sort out the network so it can be used at the speeds it was intended to I dnt mind paying for service (being in the service industry myself) but then it must work as it should.

Is there any refund/compensation scheme if your card doesn't perform as advertised?

Not as far as I know but I do know that the HSDPA speed is advertised as up to 1.8 not a consistant 1.8 In my view it should be consistantly higher than 3G speeds otherwise I'm getting ripped off.
It was great when I got it speeds were normally close to a meg now I feel like I'm getting ripped off.

/edit had a disconnect while posting this

Is ANY speed guaranteed by Vodacom? I tried a card in Canal Walk. There is a noticeable delay. You press the button and wait, then after a second or two, a page loads. Would this be included in any speed test?

V3g you have to admit these speeds are less than impressive and very erratic.

Any word from the Radio guys as to whats going on.
