Hi

I apologise in advance if this has already been answered elsewhere on the forum. I have recently got my HTC Hero on a Vodacom contract with a Build Number of 2.73.1104.4 Can anyone confirm if firstly, Build 2.73.405.5 is the latest upgrade and if so, the way to go. Anyone done this with any noticable improvements?

Thanks and regards

where do you see this new build 2.73.405.5 ?

HTC website? leaf?

surely 1104 is higher than 405?

Does this mean that even though Leaf are behind in releasing Android updates in SA, I can do it myself? In other words, I can get a Hero with 1.5 on it and flash it with 2.1? Voiding the warranty of course!

Browse over to XDA-developers.com and htcpedia.com. They have a ton of ROMs available - including the most updated versions.

Hi Guys

It is "the middle of March" have any of you heard anything about the Hero 2.1 update?

I really hope that it is on its way.

PS the Hero is still a great phone with 1.5 :D

I've been checking the site every damn day this month. Just going to have to sit tight I guess ;)

ok. so can you update to the latest updates or not? and if so, unless it’s from Leaf, you lose your warranty?

Don't hold your breath from LEAF ... if you read around online you will see the following when it comes to Android Upgrades in SA

Leaf says they are waiting for Google SA and Vodacom
Vodacom says they are waiting for Google SA and Leaf
and Google says they are waiting for Vodacom and Leaf

so everyone is pointing at everyone else.

Here is a good example ... overseas HTC released a Cupcake version with the Sense UI for the Magic, but locally
we don't have it. I asked, and lead says google hasn't authorized it yet ... however there is no change in the actual
android version, only the sense is the update ... which is HTC software, so why wait for google?

Leaf are pathetic, and we will probably not see a 2.1 update this year, or at least for the Magic anyway, but maybe not
even Hero ... (Specs are almost identical on the two)

Got the same answer from Leaf a month or so ago. At the moment you can't even download the ROM update from the HTC site - says something about it not being available for your region. I managed to find a suitable IMEI online and used that to obtain download the file.

When you launch it, everything looks hopeful and it actually gets to rebooting the phone and copying files but then aborts with an "invalid customer ID" error.

The trouble is that the ROMs are localised by the relevant distributor so when you download from HTC it uses your IMEI to work out your region and then serve you a localised ROM. I'd be happy to have to manually set up my WAP data again though if it meant being able to try out Andoid 2.

Does anyone know if it's possible to alter the customer ID or modify the ROM so it accepts this ID?

I succeeded in locating the actual .rom file in the downloaded file, placing it on the sdcard and rooting my phone but it gave an error when I tried to load the rom from the "boot menu". I took a look at the XDA developers site but a) it's a bit too technical for the time I want to spend on this and b) I want the standard ROM from HTC - not another version!

My decision to get the Hero lies on it getting the 2.0 ROM. Is my waiting unfounded. Should I get the Hero anyway?

I have the HTC HEro and am very happy with it so far, even on 1.5 it still rocks :D

The fact that we will be getting the 2.1 update(I am sure we will) is a nice bonus and definitely something to look forward to but I cannot see much changing.

Got this today with regards to the magic from Leaf:
Good Day Thank you for contacting HTC support. The rom upgrade with HTC sense for the magic is still going through quality testing with the south african networks, and be available for download in 2 weeks from www.leaf.co.za We still waiting confirmation from google south africa, if the 1.6,2.0,2.1 is going to be available for the magic. Regards HTC support

According to a supposedly leaked release schedule for HTC Hero, apparently the Android 2.1 with Sense UI update will only be available in April...

Apparently the 22nd for Vodacom subscribers in SA... Though as the article says, this could all be faked!

I wonder if they'll even bring out 2.1 for the Magic seeing as they are basically the same phone with the only real differences being a 3.5mm jack and better camera.

Nevermind :( ... found an article where HTC said they aren't going to release an official update for the Magic to 2.1 ... stupid if you ask me, it's the same bloody hardware ... and Rogers is doing it overseas :(

If they dont, someone at xda will.

Yeah ... but it's always nicer to have something official ... I don't want to break the warranty on a new phone :P ... also, I'll have to crack my SPL if I do want to and risk bricking the phone.

Let's see what happens after they release the Magic 1.5 Sense UI update in about 2 weeks (or so they say).

For what is available in South Africa at the moment, what is the latest ROM that I should have on my Hero?

Which Android version (1.5 or 1.6 or 2)?
Which Build version?
Which kernet?
Software version?

This is all kinda confusing, because most of the info on the web is for overseas users, which have different version Hero's and so forth, and also some of the updates are not official updates that can void the warranty.....so just want to know what versions I must have to be as updated as I possibly can be in SA?

Hence why I created a local Android site ... I had the same irritation as you about info for overseas users :P
Currently the latest version for your Hero is OS 1.5, and if you can see the Android Market, you have the latest version. If you aren't sure, then you can download the latest ROM from the leaf website, see here for our discussion about the local ROMS: http://www.androidza.co.za/smf/index.php?topic=10.msg36#msg36

Also, Android 2.1 is coming out for your phone, see: http://www.androidza.co.za/content/google-android-21-eclair-south-african-htc-hero-users-april
