Huawei AX3 Router

What kind of router? And where are you located?
I’m in Pretoria. Ideally it’ll be something better than what I have … I’m currently using a D-Link DSL-G2562DG, which is a bog standard AC1200 dual-band (5GHz and 2.4GHz).

Best offer by Wednesday next week gets it, nice and simple.

I've got one of these but for whatever reason it doesn't like my work's VPN service, so I had to downgrade back to a trusty D-Link again. If anyone really wants the AX3 and has a router to trade, let me know.

If there’s no trade I’ll give you R500 for it.

Weird about the VPN thing though.

Is it possible to enable dynamic DNS on this router?
I can't find the option anywhere.....

There’s no Dynamic DNS client on the routers and very few off the shelf do that. It’s a D-Link trick mostly.

Just run it on something else on your network.

So, an update from my side.

I seem to have the mesh working. I think. Will need help confirming.

I took both my AX3 and WS5200 to my parents house today, and started testing. I found that my AX3 as secondary to their AX3 worked in mesh mode. Had it connected via cable and both routers seemed to be playing along.

Tested the WS5200 as secondary and... No go. Does not want to play ball. Also couldn't get their B618 to work. What I did notice is that it has a WPS button, not an 'H' button like the rest. So no mesh there. At this point I'm not sure what to make of the B618.

I ended up trading my WS5200 for my parents' AX3 and brought it home. That's when the trouble started... again.

With my AX3 as primary, I couldn't get the network up and running (not via cable at least). switched them around and again, routers refused to mesh. Then I tried mine as the secondary but connecting the two via Wifi instead of cable. This seemed to do the trick. I then moved my 2nd AX3 upstairs and plugged it into the switch- and it seems that it is still working, and reporting it's now connected via cable. At this point I'm not sure but I think I have it working.

Now, 1 thing I'm still concerned about. In a mesh setup, should I be able to distinguish between and be able to log into both primary and secondary routers? (Logging in via web, using IP addresses). Or should it only truly appear as a single router? Also, side note, Whole network is running on 10.0.0.x

When logging in to the 2nd AX3, I get this (shows repeater mode):

Ax3_Secondary.jpg
The Huawei AI app also shows the following under the Hilink option tab, which it never did before (only showed one router with the 2nd being listed as a device o the first):
hilink_mesh_2.jpg

As you can see, the secondary router shows it has my phone as a connected device.

Also, even though both [AX3] routers report being on the same firmware, there is very definitely a difference- for one, my router has port forwarding settings under the LAN tab which the other AX3 does not have (when it was primary / used alone). The router I got from my parents has no port forwarding settings that I can find (for Plex, which seems to work anyway so no biggie).

At his point, cautiously optimistic things are working as they should. Or am I fooling myself?

Nevermind, my dumbass was looking in the wrong location for the port forwarding settings, found it.

Looks like all is working as it should at home, congrats.

As I mentioned, I have a B618 meshing with WS5200 at work so it is definitely possible.

I have a long house so wanted to setup AX3 as an extra WiFi base station using Ethernet. Mesh will not work well since the signal is so weak at that location. After many tries I got it to work.
  • Plug PC in LAN Port
  • Reset router with 2s on reset port
  • Windows should open a Webpage with 192.168.3.1 afer 10s
  • Agree to updates and user agreement
  • At bottom "Configure network settings without a network cable connected"
  • Select "Ethernet bridging" option
  • Setup WiFi + password
  • Disable retain key settings (when resetting it will reset all settings)
  • IPv4 only
  • Wait until it says you can plug in the Ethernet into the WAN Port
All works well.

I had to look in my DHCP log on main router to get the new management address assigned by DHCP.

What other WiFi router do you have? And why isn't cabled mesh an option?

I'd like to do a bit of a thread revival. I bought a WS5200 last week for meshing with my AX3 (from Afrihost).

No matter what I do, I cannot get these 2 routers to mesh. I've tried sans cable, with cable, AX3 as primary, WS5200 as primary and nothing I do works. I've done a factory reset on both, multiple times while trying out different configs.

Trying without cable, the primary router will start flashing as if setting up the mesh, but the secondary then ends up with the default wifi SSID (which is open, nogal, not encrypted), but with internet connectivity- doesn't matter which one is set up to be primary, same story. It doesn't seem to pic up the SSID form the primary router.

Using cables (which I would prefer), the only thing I've managed to do is set up both routers manually, but what I end up with, is not a mesh network. I simply get two wifi networks with the same SSIDs but on different subnets. I like using 10.0.0.x for my home setup- the other- secondary- router then ends up on the 192.x range - not a meshed network. The primary router (doesn't matter which one is set up to be primary) never starts blinking to indicate meshing.

Both routers report being on the latest firmware. Any help? Anyone?

Just another testimonial as I have the same set-up and circumstances. My AX3 from Afrihost fails to transmit upstairs from its current downstairs location beside the ONT.

I had originally planned to buy the TP Link set of 3 from Incredible as it seemed like good value, but meshing a R799 5200 from Takealot with turnkey operation seemed like even better value.

After much trial and error with the H button, cabling and wireless I have a separate wifi network on the 5200 as an outcome but there was never any way to obtain the fabled meshing. I live about 5 minutes away from Afrihost so I may take up the offer of the walk-in when time allows.

Good luck. I'm curious what the walk-in testing with AH will reveal if you decide to try that.
Also curious if 2 WS5200 routers can mesh with each other.

I'm also wondering if it's a firmware bug (and where), and if maybe AH versions of the AX3 routers run different firmware to ones that are, for example, for sale from other vendors such as Takealot- my train of thought being, if one were to purchase an AX3 from TAL, if it would indeed mesh with an AX3 obtained from AH or if it would exhibit the same issues as the WS5200. That is, if it is a firmware bug, is it in the AH/AX3 router firmware, or in the 'stock' routers- assuming there is a difference in firmware.

I have 2 of these modems, both are loaded with the Afrihost firmware. Everytime I reset the modem it loads the afrihost settings.
I am trying to set the mesh but because the afrihost settings keep loading, it's making the process very difficut.

So 1. How do I remove these settings?
2. Where can I download the latest firmware so I can load the original firmware, thereby removing whatever kak Afrihost has done to the modem.( I have tried googling, but not winning)

Hello.

When logged into the router, Choose System Settings Network and click the TR069 tab to disable it. That will remove the default configuration of the router.

I have tried this, but if you reset the modem it puts all those settings back, renames the ssid, changes the password and sets up an additional ssid when making the mesh.

I did this and it worked for me, I have 1 AX3 from Afrihost as main router, I then have another AX3 also from Afrihost as repeater, I also have a WS5200 as another repeater also from Afrihost all working beautifully, 1 SSID and speeds are perfect, both repeaters are not plugged in using network cable.

Looking for 2 more AX3's, 1 to replace the WS5200 and I want to add 1 more repeater.

Does it remain your SSID to Afrihost followed by your initials?

The TR-069 config is firmware embded. If you reset the default setting is on so you need to switch it off before the router connects to the internet to prevent the auto config being pushed. Best way to do this is to reset and plug the Ethernet from the wan to a pc or laptop. Log into the router and switch TR-069 off. Now you can setup the mesh.

We don't load push auto configs if you buy additional routers as they won't be linked to a fibre service.
