Is it network locked? Probably not, then you could just put in the SIM, have the correct APN and you're online!

Is it network locked? Probably not, then you could just put in the SIM, have the correct APN and you're online!
I believe by default the Vodafone routers use the internet APN so it should "just work" without any changes.

Yip, I can confirm this. I was lent a SIM card and USB dongle from CellC (flippen good service if you ask me). The dongle worked fine, but the router could only connect at edge speed. But what I can't understand is that their website says that the B970 will work but to a max of 7.2mb/s. The modem/router is on a Vodacom contract if that makes a difference. When putting in the SIM card, it says CellC in the setup menu.
This is a pitty as I would really like to go this way.

The B970 does not support 900MHz WCDMA, the B970b does. That is why you only get EDGE.
Huawei B970 router settings for ip cameras
Please...can someone help met with step by step directions on how to setup my Huawei B970 router for use with 2 ip cameras. My APN has been set to unrestricted by Vodacom but thats it - I do not know what to do now - I'm totally clueless. The cams are Foscam type. I would like to view them via the internet.
how do I change my APN to unrestricted via the router's admin site?
must i setup a static ip and do I do that?
must i setup port forwarding and how do i do that?
what is dyndns?
I'm totally clueless - don't know where to start, what to do. Please help

Check the first post in this thread. It will help you set your APN and DynDNS.
When I have time I'll note the steps for port forwarding.
I suggest you go do some reading on the setup of your IP cams and what ports they operate on because you will need that when you need to setup port forwarding.

Needed system to change internal user, pass and APN.

This year I bought a Vodafone(Spain) B970. It was necessary as the exterior antenna connector is a must when you live in a low level signal place.
The problem starts when you change of operator. After unlock it (yes, was locked by Vodafone) I can work with any operator in a generic "Mobile Partner" software well configured in my PC, working connected through the USB PC-B970 cable with the B970 like a big dongle. It´s obvious I configure the operator User, Password and APN as I like in the Mobile Partner.
But things change when I try to work connecting the B970 to the +12V power adaptor. Then starts to work with its own internal software, well protected by Vodafone with an untouchable preconfigured list of its own international operators. I can´t change the operator User, Password and APN out of that list. I don´t have any Vodafone Unrestricted field in the list. All user, passwords and APNs are in grey and I can´t modify them. And what´s worse I need work in that conditions as at home we have 3 portatil PCs connected by WiFi with the B970.
In short, how can I modify the operator User, Password and APN in the internal B970 software when is protected?
Any idea?

Yes, freedom has a price... but I don´t like briks as USB-modems.
In spite of having updated the firmware of some usb-modems with success, in this case I´m not confident with my B970.
I was thinking in a little modification of the firmware through its internal mini operative system via telnet.
By the way, in your first page you mention a custom firmware by Huawei but the link sends me to an empty and locked page of the Huawei forum. Do you know where can I find now this generic software?
If I try to firmware update the B970 I think it would be better do it with a generic soft instead of doing it with another Vodafone soft.

Unfortunately the B970 can be tricky to upgrade, but myself and few others on the forum took the pain and I believe the steps I have put together will work 99% of the time.
The link was for the toolchain for the E960, which you could use (in theory) to compile your own firmware. That probably has way more risk than using the Vodafone firmware. The Vodafone firmware for South Africa is unlocked so you can edit all the settings (including APN). Note: This does not necessarily mean it will unlock a locked device, but it is worth testing.
I know it's a tough call to make when flashing firmware. If it helps at all the router mode and the modem mode are separate. So if the flash breaks the router mode you can still use the modem.
From reading the OpenWRT link it does seem that some people have loaded firmware from other providers with success.

I did brick my first one, but the replacement went through fine, which is how I refined my update procedure. Thank goodness for Vodacom's 2 year warranty
Your other option is to buy a 3G router with a USB port. There are so many to choose from.
