Huawei P6

My sister is most probably getting this phone this month. I read a few pages back that it comes with a cover and I'd like to know how it looks, and also if there are any shops that sell alternative covers and screen protectors. I had a look at a couple small retailers around me but all their covers were for iPhones and S4s.

Looks like a standard TPU case... Nothing special. Only covers the back. Slightly opaque with a tint of the color of the phone :)

hey guys, is there an official update for this? If not, will there be one and when will it be in SA?

In SA no,

Europe is rolling out B125
China is rolling out B120

4.4.x with Emotion UI 2.3 is supposedly to roll out globally in February. We will need to wait until this date.

Furthermore the P6S was to launch with 4.4.x with Emotion UI 2.3, but:

Huawei quietly launches Ascend P6 S with minor changes

Huawei quietly put out an S version of its super-thin Ascend P6 smartphone. The Huawei Ascend P6 S is 0.3 thicker, but still only goes as high as 6.5mm, though it has the same battery capacity of 2,000mAh.

The chipset has been bumped up a bit and now features a quad-core 1.6GHz processor (up from 1.5GHz). It’s not clear if it’s Huawei’s own chipset again, but there’s no LTE support either way. It’s a dual-SIM, dual-standby phone, the original P6 had a dual-SIM option.

The rest of the specs are identical - 4.7” LCD with 720p resolution (the display works with gloves), 2GB RAM, 16GB storage, 8MP main camera and a 5MP front-facing camera.

The Ascend P6 S runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Emotion UI 2.0 on top. The phone is currently available on Vmall (Huawei’s own web store) and is available only on China Unicom.

The price is CNY 2,700 ($446 / €330), but is temporarily CNY 300 off (until tomorrow). This puts the price at the same level as the 8GB Ascend P6 (CNY 2,400). The regular price is the same as the Ascend Mate 2, which went on sale a couple of days ago.

It is also clear at this stage that the P6S will only be available in China, no use to have dual-sim roll out in other regions.

Vodaworld Altech have this for R 189 with 200mb and 75 anytime minutes for 24 months which make it quite attractive. I have a few questions for the owners of this phone - sorry, make that many questions:

  1. Battery life, has this been sorted with the latest firmware? What are you getting now?
  2. GPS lock and reset has this been sorted with the latest firmware?
  3. Phone becoming hot (not warm) when watching movies etc. Is this still the case?
  4. Wi-Fi problems where this phone cannot see certain Wi-Fi networks, anyone experience this? Any fixes?
  5. Camera quality? Has this improved with the latest firmware? Anyone got far and near shots they could provide as an example?
  6. Hardware and build quality, how is this phone holding up?
  7. What is the latest firmware version?
  8. Would you buy it again?

I am undecided because I get conflicting reports about Huawei's build quality and all the reviews are on the old firmware.

I have tried and tested B118 and B125, but moved back to the original B107 due to possibly OTA update errors. Do note that SA is still stuck on B107 and have not received any Europe rollout.

The answers:

  1. My phone only drains heavily (100% to zero in 6hrs) while browsing the internet with either WiFi or 3G, B118 improved my phone drastically as I normally have 1,½hrs on standby (only taking calls and utilising IM’s) and with the update I could browse as normal and still get my 1,½hrs with 100% charge. I use my business phone 24/7 so I cannot really comment on the P6 as a daily driver.
  2. Fixed 100% (B118)
  3. I never had this problem, even tested with heavy gaming.
  4. Never experienced this.
  5. Not the best camera on the market, mediocre quality, not really disappointed as I use a separate camera.
  6. Rate the hardware between an S3 and S4, however the quality is superior in relation with the price point. Do note that B125 provides the best that the hardware can deliver, would like to see what 4.4 will bring to this phone next month.
  7. B125 (Europe), OTA not available in SA, but 4.4 with Emotion UI 2.3 is to be released next month with global rollout.
  8. No, already have one.
The XDA have some nice comparisons in relation with the Firmware updates. Do note that you can custom install a leaked version or regional release.

In my case should the 4.4 update be postponed when time comes due in SA, I will move back to B125. Also, as previously mentioned in this thread, MIUI based on 4.4 is also due next month and will be P6 ready.

1. Mine is plugged in most of day on my desk, but overall I am happy. The power intensive manager works well to manage heavy apps and notify you. Much better than my old blackberry.
2. Have not realy used the GPS much.
3. Never had problem with heat.
4. Working super on my wifi at home.
5. Decent camera but not top of the range. Outside photos is good but indoors dim light is dissapointing. I find that setting to widescreen 6 megapixel instead of 8 megapixel default, produce snappier indoors or low light photos.
6. The body feel solid yet sleek. The metal casing does not feel cheap and chinesy.
7. Im on stock firmware B119, waiting for the newest leaked B125 to become official in SA.
8. Considering the value for money, Yes

Thanks for the feedback guys. I am leaning more towards the moto g right now, but bang for your buck this is a good deal.

I have experienced the same issue listed as #4... At work, wifi simply refuses to work on our Cisco and Netgear routers, however it works perfectly on my Huawei and Samsung (Android AP hotspot) at home... Not sure why yet....

Also, my device reboots occasionally.. even though it starts up within 15 secs, it does become very annoying!

Also, my device reboots occasionally.. even though it starts up within 15 secs, it does become very annoying!

I used to have random reboots on my Motorola Defy, someone on this forum found that the problem was with the SIM card, it was too old. I got a new SIM and have yet to see a reboot.

I really wish mine could've been that, but I bought the micro sim on Monday, so I doubt it is that...
I'm not finding anything online....

So Huawei is bringing us 4.4.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2418399

Do note that this XDA link contains the 4.4 BETA rom with UI 2.3 (WITHOUT GApps), don’t FLASH. Also the leaked beta copy can apparently only be installed by the local updater on the phone. No screenshots or benchmarks and do note that this is still a BETA rom.

On another note, the BETA testing had been pushed back and some testers are still waiting on the OTA update, this can likely mean that 4.4 will only rollout in March/April, or even only 4.3 (with UI 2.3) as some BETA testers are experiencing. They are also seeking new recruitments (sorry, no SA) to test an Ultra version.

This still worries me, as B120 is only starting to roll out now in other Asian parts and B125 is rolling out slowly in Europe... delays... delays... delays...

Here we go (as per my above post):

Android 4.4 KitKat Beta for Ascend P6 Leaked

Finally we have a leak just like we predicted on this post - http://huaweinews.com/2014/01/ascend-p6-emotionui-2-3/. Few hours ago Ascend P6, Android 4.4 KitKat with Emotion UI 2.3 Beta firmware was leaked on Chinese forums. According to the initial testers, this firmware is mostly stable but don’t take our word for that just yet, because even the initial testers weren’t ran this firmware for over 24 hours. Here are some information about this leaked firmware in easy to understand form

Compatibility – Ascend P6-U06
Android version – 4.4.2
Emotion UI version – 2.3
Firmware version - V100R001C00B014EDGE
Kernel version – 3.0.8
Languages – Multi-Language
Google Apps included – NO

http://huaweinews.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/kitkat-beta-ascend-p6.jpg

screenshots from XDA

This firmware can be flashed via “local update” option on settings menu of your Ascend P6 and initial testers confirmed that this can be flashed from any current firmware versions such as B125, B118. This firmware includes new software functions such as floating Apps like you see on the above screenshot.

Alert!
This is a beta firmware and HuaweiNews.com takes no responsibility over bricked phones and other issues. Always flash these kind of stuff at your own risk

Download link - http://dl.huaweinews.com/Roms/Ascend-P6/EMUI2.3V100R001C00B014EDGE-U00-Beta.rar

Note : Unrar the file after downloading. Installation is done by default Huawei update.app method as previously stated

Only issue seems to be the lack of Google Apps but it can be installed using TWRP recovery for KitKat. If you don’t know how to do that. Await for our guide about it. Please report your ideas and suggestions about this firmware by leaving a comment and if you managed to Root this firmware we would love to hear about your approach to that as well.

Okay, don't know about the OTA, but it seems that we will need to update to B125, then B014 (4.4.2 UI 2.3), when this is happening I don't know. Huawei said that we can expect the update in Jan and we are already in Feb so maybe somewhere this month, perhaps we can OTA on B107 to B014. Do note that B014 may still be the BETA version, also on XDA there was a developer which stated that the kernel (3.0.8) in the BETA is not the production ready kernel and might have several issues.

The UI however look like MIUI V5 in my opinion… Damn, really want the App Drawer, but I did notice that they included the “hide” button below.

Okay, as things stand now it seems that we will be receiving 4.4.2 with UI 2.0 this month as per international rollout and UI 2.3 in March/April. This according to XDA contributors presumptions.

Otherwise we can start to look here:

Club Huawei XDA - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566453

MIUI based on 4.4.2 will also be available this month supporting the P6.

Getting this phone, the gsmarena.com ratings are very good and I'm glad that huawei have been making update for major issues like the heating etc, will definitely do a test of the gps as I use gps now and then.

Knew this was going to happen...

Huawei Ascend P6 Android 4.4 KitKat Delayed

After Huawei failed to deliver the update in January, the company has pushed the time-frame to February. We’re still some weeks away from the end of the month, and we’re hopeful that the Ascend P6 will receive its KitKat goodness by March.

Sadly though, according to sources cited by HuaweiNews, February might be out of the question as well. According to these reports, the roll-out on the Ascend P6 has been delayed until early March – at least for the Chinese Unicom variant.

This means that the Ascend P6 outside of China might receive KitKat even later than that. On the other hand, the P6 is quite a successful device, and there’s a chance that Huawei will roll-out the update on a global scale at the same time. We can’t know for sure, but you might have to deal with a delay nonetheless.

On the bright side, at the end of January, a beta KitKat firmware for the P6 has been leaked, and perhaps by the time the official update hits the waves, a new, more complete firmware will hit the blogosphere once again, giving P6 owners a “quick fix” until the big day arrives. Stay tuned.

There is a whole issue surrounding the Emotion UI, also the Firmware release available to the beta leak is not actually made to run with 4.4.x which relate to various other issues. Honestly I don’t even think that they do have interest in developing it that much in line with the P6/S due to a detailed leak on XDA which seemed to have disappeared in regard with the Firmware progress. Don’t know, but Huawei is now everything P7…

I’m not a happy customer until Hauwei can publish a PR response on this matter as leaked news is that much credible to start with…

I cracked the screen of my P6 a while back, luckily the touch screen was still fully functional and I could still use it. I took it in to the new MTN repair center in Bloemfontein and after a week they quoted me a R1400 for the repair. They had to send it to a Huawei repair center to get a quote, maybe it would be cheaper to send it directly to Huawei for repairs but I don’t know how and where. I suppose it’s not too bad because a screen repair for a S3 is R1800 and for a Z1 it’s over R2000. I will comment on the quality of the repair as soon as I get it back.
