Huawei P6

I think I am stuck already.

"* Update your device to officially Huawei KitKat Beta by /dload/UPDATE.APP method"

First instruction and I am lost.

Okay, so I am dowloading the beta.

I wonder what the chances of me not ****ing this up are? :D

Unlikely, its near impossible to eff up, but I ran into problems after my update, the notification bar slide down icons were all gone. I had trouble with my contact and calendar syncing, aka they did not. Also there is a known bug affecting certain users, where 3G does not work as there are no PAN settings and manually adding them in also does not work. I have heard of a few SA guys syaing it works, I tried with CellC, MTN, Vodacom and Telkom sims, have them all in my house on various devices and could not get 3G to work. If I was not on wifi I had no internet. There was a thread on XDA about it, a few guys posted, some ot say they had troubles, others to say it worked including 1 guy from SA on Vodacom.

Remember, its a WCDMA version, so it works on GSM network, but is not specifically built for them.

The root option that works sucks, so that messed things up further, had to actually flash and start over and flashing that update clean is terrible, no gapps, sync issues get even worse, a number of buggs. I was about to flash back to jellybean when Omnirom got a nice update so I decided to go for that instead and super happy.

BWT: this is not a beta, its the leaked official China release, unless of course you are downloading the beta from like January.

I have now had a bit of a crash-course in Android.

I've installed the official Chinese Kit-Kat release, and off the bat, there is one awesome improvement I love - The fact that I can slide my three buttons off the screen!

So, next step is TWRP, for which I am busy downloading the Android SDK so I can fastboot and install it. Does this sound correct? :D

I am also downloading the latest Omni-rom, and will do it all tonight.

That's all good, just bare in mind that you will factory reset during that process, so EVERYTHING will be lost

I have to choose between the Huawei Ascend P6 and the LG G2 Mini. Any suggestions or comments are welcome.

Well you in the wrong thread then, pretty much everyone here will say P6.

Personally I cannot comment on the LG anyway, never owned one and likely never will, not unless Huawei starts making rubbish phones and LG awesome ones.

All aluminum build, BSI camera and 720p screen sells the P6 for me.

I am not very experienced with these things, but the P6 is a nice looking phone, just fairly slow, considering its specs. Using google maps is a trial. The battery is not great either.

I have similar gripes with my P1 so I set battery saver on maximum, got a Class 10 Micro SD card to speed up caching, and my phone is always on 2g when connected to WiFi. Turning down the brightness also helps :)

If you're talking about me, then I'm a girl! :(

Have you tried using the "cust" folder for Vodacom from the B125 update? You'll need to be rooted to do all that though, and extracting the Vodacom folder is a bit of an effort, but it's worth the trouble in the end. I'll save you the trouble though, and upload mine, but I'll only be able to do that tomorrow, because I need to edit it just a bit, if I remember. :p: o

Also, the apn settings for Vodacom, and a whole lot of other international carriers, are in cust > hw > normal > apps-conf.xml, so I'm not sure why it doesn't work for you.

Also, did you flash gapps after you updated to B506?

Well my apologies, how was I supposed to know the gender of a random South African on xda.

I already moved to omnirom and its way better than B506, faster, smoother and like 20% of the size.

Seriously just going to stick with custom roms from now on, unless it's a nexus, the device is just loaded up with useless rubbish. I for the life of me cannot see why the official update for Huawei, which as far as I can tell is 1 of the least modded phones has a 1.4gb update without gapps, yet a custom rom with more visible features can toss in gapps and still fall far short of 400mb.

Why not just disable network data when on wifi, and don't be fooled, 2G is not always better, if you with CellC or telkom then 3G actually uses less battery, remember, with them, when not roaming, you are on a 900mhz band, 2G falls back onto the older 1800mhz.

Being with CellC myself I actually went and tested that to see for myself.

Well, I am stuck.

I've done this:

http://techbeasts.com/2013/08/26/how-to-install-adb-fastboot-drivers-on-your-windows-pc-guide/

But it will not install the drivers for the device.

Not sure what to do here.

That ones already outdated. Not sure about getting drivers, but you do not need the entire SDK. Install that HiSuite thing, it has all the drivers you need, for mass storage, camera mode, fastboot, the works. Its just easier.

I will upload my ADB with image for you, no sense downloading 300mb of SDK when all you need is 16mb of adb.

OMNI has also been updated, not sure which version you have so go take a look, this one is said to fix the call delay bug http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2673839
