Huawei P8 & P8 Lite - Reviews, tips & tricks

Anyone want to buy a P8lite so new that I don't even have it yet? :D

Just ordered one on smart plan 100 from Telkom.
Plan to use the sim in my S5 and sell the p8lite.

Reason?
I spend R150pm on data and another R150 on airtime.
on smart plan 100, I will get 1GB+150mb data, 100 minutes and for the first 12 months, unlimited calls on the TM network.
Fiancee is on TM also so the unlimited calls would help.
There's also an unlimited data promo for this summer.

They have the sim only deal on smart plan 100 for R129 but excludes data.

.....If the rep you're dealing with at cell store isn't a total buffoon you can create custom deals...no need to pay more for a device you don't want.

That was an option... but then I would have ended up paying R229 for a sim only deal :) (R129 for smart plan 100 + R99 for 1GB data) so I decided to go for the p8lite which is only R199pm.

Bah I'm used to more expensive devices where you pay in above contract price and taking SIM only is generally already at least 100 bucks cheaper.

I see P8 Lite only scored 53hrs in the GSMArena battery test which is pretty poor.

Those who own one - how does it do in a real world day - can you make it to bedtime on a charge?

Same as the G4...and people love that phone.

It's rather decent actually... Lasts me the day

My wife has the dual sim version and it sees her through the whole day . She charges it full before going to bed and then only charges it again when returning from work . So around a full day and she is very heavy on the messaging (BBM , e mail and whatsapp ) . She does not play any games on it though so not too sure how that would effect the battery drain . It's actually a very decent device for the money and I can see why it is so popular here in SA at the moment .

For its price it's 13MP camera is also pretty decent . My wife went for it because she wanted a Dual Sim device with local support and the Mate 7 was too big for her ,so she went for the P8 lite . She got it from Cell C as they are the only ones locally with the dual sim version as far as I know .

Thanks for the feedback conner13.

Does that mean the devices from Telkom have their dual sim functionality disabled like Voda and MTN?

I was at the mall now this morning and the unit they had on display at Telkom was only a single sim version , so I presume they are only stocking the single sim versions like vodacom and MTN . They were too busy to ask a consultant ,but when my wife got hers at Cell C a while back when they were launched the Huawei Rep in the Cell C store did say that only Cell C were stocking the dual sim version .

From another thread, it was stated that all P8 and P8 lite's are dual sim, but the networks are disabling the second sim via a firmware modification. If one was to get the nanosim/sd card tray for the second alot on the side and flash unbranded firmware, one might be able to overcome this.

I remember something like that in one of the threads , not sure if anyone got it right though or what it would do to the devices warranty should you need to take it in for repairs or anything .

The fact that networks are disabling the dual sim facililty completely turns me off the phone. Paying R2500 cash or the R150pm Telkom 50 deal are great pricing but without dual sim, the phone loses major appeal.

Agreed. Disappointed that the phone doesn't allow you to force using LTE. Don't forget about telkom mobile unlimited data promotion until March.

Are you sure about this? My fiancee has one from Telkom.
Even though I haven't tested it yet, I do have the options for dual sim operation.

Don't have a source link, but Voda and MTN guys have reported lack of dual sim in the settings....

I played with a unit in a Cell C store and the dual sim settings were still in the device.
