Hurricane Irma

IRMAGEDDINOUTTAHERE!!

Florida has been placed in a state of emergency already. Florida Keys will start mandatory evacuations from tomorrow I hear. We wnt to Walmart today to buy some groceries and the shelves for water were empty. people were asking the staff if water was available and when they brought out a few cases they were snapped up in no time. Lucky the one manager kinda knows us from shopping there and when I came closer he handed me a pack of water. later on they wheeled out some more and people were going frantic like it was BLACK FRIDAY. My daughters boyfriend has his family in Puerto Rico and they had no power since a few days ago already so hope they will be safe and he is in Miami (studying and working) and we want him to come up to us in Boca just in case. Our landlord just sent everyone a notice to bring in all loose stuff outside to avoid the stuff flying around. My daughter is in college here too and they will monitor the storm to see if they will close. I think the landscaping company my wife works at, might close because the guys wont be able to work. My place of work might want us to install the storm shields over the windows like last year, which we f@#^ up by the way so only did half. last year we had a hurricane but I felt the South Easter on the Cape Town foreshore was stronger.

Let's see what this week brings.

good luck. I was i Orlando when Hugo hit in the early 90s

Irma is now one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic

Irma is now an “extremely dangerous” Category 5 hurricane with wind speeds up to 185 miles per hour, according to the National Hurricane Center. That makes it the strongest hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean outside of the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.

It’s still unclear where exactly the hurricane will make landfall in the US and which parts of the East Coast it will affect, but there’s an “increasing chance” that Florida will be impacted later this week and in the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said. The hurricane is expected to affect the Leeward Islands later today and the British and US Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico tomorrow.

thanks man.

Not sure if work and schools are closing but our other daughter is planning on driving north to escape the hit if or when it comes. we might pack too for a long trip.

I have family directly in its path. Nervously waiting for it to hit. Only hours away now...

Hurricane Irma is so strong it's registering on devices designed to detect earthquakes

Hurricane Irma is so strong it's showing up on seismometers — equipment designed to measure earthquakes.

"What we’re seeing in the seismogram are low-pitched hums that gradually become stronger as the hurricane gets closer to the seismometer on the island of Guadeloupe," said Stephen Hicks, a seismologist at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

The noise is likely caused by high winds — which cause tiny motions in the ground — and also by trees swaying in the wind, which also transfers energy into the ground, he said. The seismometer is located close to the ocean, so waves crashing along the coastline reverberate around the island, also generating seismic energy, Hicks added.

To reiterate an old joke... Why are hurricanes named after women?

Cos when they come they're wet and wild, and when they leave they take your house and car with them.
