Hi guys,

Okay so I can't take it anymore, Telkom line is the worst experience I've ever had. It's been months of struggling and struggling, and I've reached the point where I can't deal with it anymore. Line is constantly dropping, had no service for 3 days last week (no voltage on line). Currently I'm on 10mbps Telkom uncapped ADSL. The line literally drops 16-30 times an hour (yes, I've been logging it). They've "fixed" this problem countless times, and I can't deal with this level of "service" anymore, I'm fed up.

The thing is, as far as I can tell, the problem is that the copper lines in my area are so old and basically rotten that no matter who I get as an ADSL ISP, I'll probably have the same problem. But I don't know, can anyone advise on this? Should I go for mobile broadband like maybe Neotel NeoBroadband Wireless?

What I need: at least 6mbps uncapped, reliable connection, for no more than about R1200 per month. Please help me find a new ISP :(

Changing isp won't fix your line issues.
 
That's what I suspected, makes sense...

So I guess my only real option is to go wireless. The thing is I need uncapped, so 3G/LTE will be way to expensive for uncapped. I guess Neobroadband Wireless is the way to go then. Any comments on this?

I want to cancel my Telkom Internet tomorrow morning.
 
Your line is marginal for 10mb.
Ask Telkom to drop you to an 8mb sync profile and see if it gets better.
 
I have, sometimes it even syncs at 4mbps and still drops constantly. They've changes the line speed countless times, it's always been giving issues.

I want to cancel the Telkom.

What have you done to investigate on your side? Things I can think of:
Change the splitter/pots filter
Check your house alarm or other devices aren't also on the phone line
Try a different modem
Report voice line as noisy
 
I've done all of those, multiple times. I've been through 3 modems. Technicians have been here multiple times in the past few months. Created many faults in the past few months, all of which were "resolved". Nothing but the modem is on the line. They've had me on many copper line pairs, all of which were intermittent, some more than others, but generally all very very bad.

Depending on where you are, you might be able to get Uncapped LTE from Telkom for less than 10mb/s uncapped adsl. It has a 50gb FUP though.

See, that is an option depending on what reception will be like here. The issue here is in fact the FUP. That will be cutting it very close if I try to really limit my bandwidth usage. I usually average about 200gb per month. And that's not even torrents or anything, that's purely work related. I use file sharing services expensively to transfer and backup large project files (video files, programming project files like Webstorm etc)
 
Heres a few things to try.

-Phone Telkom and tell them to drop your line speed down to 4mb/s and see if stabilizes, if not go down to 2mb/s. It will suck but will probably fix the problem.
-Make sure they do a port reset with these changes.
-If you don't come right with your line you can try telkom LTE but the 50gig sucks or you can try http://www.amobia.com/ they do have 10mb/s but you have to beg for it. Don't use Amobia if you connect to Sanlam building tho.
-If you feeling brave and want to rally about 26 neighbors you can try http://www.lightspeed.co.za/

Thanks for the reply, I'll look into amobia. I won't be able to get so many neighbors to join in unfortunately...

No I'm done with Telkom, completely done. To let a customer pay for "service" at this level is completely unacceptable and according to me unethical. They shouldn't let customers pay for service they can't provide. I've been struggling for months, and I haven't gotten anywhere. No longer will I accept this.
 
Thank you for the link, very helpful. I looked and looked, and I wish I had more time. I urgently need to get connected again, Telkom ADSL is completely gone, drops every 2 minutes, literally unusable.

I contacted Neotel early today (knowing here is coverage/LTE in case of no WiMax LOS) and submitted all the documentation etc and asked them to rush, so hopefully I'll have Internet before Friday, else I'm screwed. My projects require gigs of transfer a day, which I'm doing at R89/Gb via Axxess 3G top ups at the moment :( But the 3G fallback is a lifesaver.

Will report back on service levels, speed tests en general experience as things progress, for those interested.

Details so far:
Order placed online this morning, was phoned within an hour to explain installation procedure and Rica doc requirements, etc

Emailed docs after phone call and got reply 20 minutes later saying I will be contacted a day before installation will take place, which will hopefully be soon.

Very satisfied so far, friendly staff, good service, so let's see how this works out.
 
Oh and by the way, Telkom did come back to me. The problem is, according to them, an underground cable network problem. They stated that it is a complex problem and that they will address it as soon as they can. I deduce that it translates to "The underground copper wires in your area is old and screwed, we probably can't help you".
