After seeing the insanely cheap offerings from M-Web I sold my soul to the devil and applied for an ADSL connection on Telkoms eDSL site.

What happens next? Any tips or advice?

I went for ADSL only with nothing extra (phones/routers). I already have a wireless router (Linksys) so as modem I was thinking of getting a cheap TrendNET one from Take2. When/if I actually do get ADSL how do I go about getting connectivity via an ISP of my choice over it?

I'm very n00b at this.

P.S. The only reason I am getting it is for fetish porn downloads - I have no desire in low latency for gamez.
 
i ordered it myself as well, gonna pm you alot in future asking noob questions as well...so learn fast !
 
i didn't take the adsl as yet cos they need to confirm if my address has an existing line thingy or something, once thats done should i take the adsl upgrade with telkom and them move it to mweb or does mweb automatically upgrade the line for you ?

Well I hope this pans out well. I hate telkom and the mere thought of paying them each month makes me feel so violated. Then again I suppose I have to be a joiner if I want to see the end of this war.

Which is why I refuse to get a Telkom line...
 
OK, 3 weeks later and they say that tomorrow I will get my line installed. My order was changed to self install ADSL and the line will be installed for free on Closer Plan 2 (which I will cancel after installation).

Arrantly my area only has 512kbps ADSL so as soon as I have my line I will apply for 512kbps ADSL to be activated on my line. Hopefully that will not take another 3 weeks.

Looks like things are on track so far.
 
512kb/s ADSL is a rip-off when compared to 4Mb/s, I would rather just get 384kb/s
 
I'm used to 2 ~ 7mbps so I need it to be as fast as possible. But price wise I guess you are right.
 
Well, I begged and pleaded with Amobia, who is basically a wireless last mile reseller of ADSL, to also give us some sort of unlimited package but they said no.
I have also asked the mobile networks to consider lower OOB rates or at least some type of uncapped 2G package - they did not respond well enough.
Neotel was supposed to call me a year ago about coverage of my area - they did not.

So to now they can just suck my junk. The interaction I have had with Satan's little helpers over at 10219 has been very effective and friendly.
Hence forth I will be badmouthing the wireless alternatives for not doing enough to lower their prices.
I have literally spent thousands on wireless Internet and I have very little to show for it.
And no, the thrills of doing 7mbps for brief periods of time does not justify that.

Go with 384. Upgrading is easy, down is difficult. 512 sucks big time on Value per Rand side. Rather wait & see what Telkom does with the upgrades. Rumour says 384->512, 512->1mbps. Should tthat happen then it will make sense to go for the middle one.

I see what you mean - 512 is more than double the cost of 384 but less than half as fast. I'll go with 384 then to start with. Thanks for the tips so far guys, hopefully I will have cheap internet before the month is out.
 
OK - so I took the day off just to be here if the Telkom guy shows up. He did - at 16:30 :(

It was quick to find the pipe that leads from the living room to the little box in the front wall of the house. From there on its about 6 meters to the man hole in die driveway where the connection needs to be made. Sadly it was even quicker to find out that the pipe between the front wall and the man hole is either collapsed or full of junk. The pulling wire moves if you pull it real hard but there is no way you are going to pull through the copper cable :cry:

The saga continues on Saturday when the electrician will come round to see if he can sort out the pipe and pull though the telkom cable that the telkom guy kindly left behind.

Luckily for now I got the honor to test drive Amobia's uncapped 2mbps solution and it is great !
 
Right - another chapter in my tale of getting ADSL. Today I started at 7am on getting the telkom cable from the curb manhole into my house. The telkom guy on Thursday figured out the pipe is not clear so he left the cable with me and told me to get it installed and then call them again on 10129 and wait for another installation.

So let me be as brief as I can starting at 7:30am; off to builders express to buy fish tape, flush pipe with water, watch small fountain under car (2m from manhole), lift up a crap load of bricks from the pavement, find shattered pipe, attempt to pull wire through remaining section with fish tape, repeat first bit again with another fountain and breakage in pipe, dig out damaged section, back to builders express, buy 4m pipe (shortest they come in) + 20mm PVC connectors + PVC joint glue + sandpaper + trowel + rubber hammer, replace damaged section of pipe using said tools, attempt to pull cable through with fish tape, abort after 10 attempts from either side, call electrician with suction tool, start compacting pavement sand again by hand & foot, help electrician to pull cable through, clean all bricks lift from pavement, re-lay lifted pavement section.

That brings me to now. I have done a crap load of work, my hands really hurt and I have to start all over again on Monday making an appointment to have my telephone line installed.

The story will continue....

With all your hassles I would have thought that smoke signals would be more effective and less painful.
