Hi guys,

In a nutshell, if one wanted a data speed of say 1meg and a 4 gig cap, what would you all recommend as being the most cost effective and effecient. I need to be making voip calls, probably via Vonage.

Being from the UK all these cap and data cost issues are new to me. Here in the UK im paying R250 a month for uncapped, 4meg data speed.

Im moving to SA in 3 weeks and need some good direction methinks!!

Good luck with this one. If I were you I'll stay in the UK.:D ;)

Before you worry about speed, lets worry about coverage: which area are you going to stay in?

I will be staying in gordons bay, not sure if iburst coverage is great there.

Both appeal for varying reasons. I just dont fancy the prospect of negotiating with Telkom.

haha good idea Rhino, good to know that even people from the UK dont want to deal with Telkom.

I believe Gordons Bay is covered fine, its a pretty small area so you should be okay.

Wella 4 gig cap is a hard thing to get.. you should go for a 3 gig account and use the 64kb after cap access for anything extra you need. Then it probably would be the most cost effective solution for you.

EDIT: Wait, im not shure about Gordons bay, I was thinking of Strand actually.. anyone know if that reaches to gordons bay?

Coverage in G/Bay

Hi there UKR/EHV

Not so good, i'm afraid, central area is dead, but up against the hill it's better. Strand is much better along the coast but the industrial area's coverage is poor.

I would suggest Telkom, what am I saying.

Yes, A good one seems to be http://www.snowisp.com/

They are 512kb and have a 4gig cap for R400pm, perfect?

They look good, and have been going for a while.

And additional bandwidth at R100 per gig, not abd at all seeing as that includes ISP costs.

Cheers for the advice guys.

I've contacted snowisp and they have been particularly quick and helpful in their reply.

Bit of a bummer being central in GB, since Mountainside, logically has the direct viewing line for wireless.

iBurst have also contacted me but they were very keen to know the exact street before they commited - makes sense at least they arent like Telkom and would pretend it was all good before actually running a test.

Snowisps R400 for 512k and 4gb seems pretty fair.

If only i could bring my 4meg uncapped broadand from the UK with me!

No way on gods green would Telkom be allowed to operate in the UK in such a monopolistic way - let alone the prices!!!
