ICASA awards pay-TV licenses

The reason competition does not work is because guv feels that only 1 or 2 players should compete in any give space.

Yep, and with only 1 or 2 players it's much easier for them to stick their fingers in where it should not be. It would be difficult for them to have a stake in 10+ players.

Good news.

Funny how there must first be competition before monopolies like Multichoice decides to give their customers more like with the new channels.

Why cant they lower the price rather.

Pathetic :-((
Good news...more than 2 NOW will be better for the long run.The new Dstv channels are not mind blowing so i'll certainly look for an alternative. And if that is Telkom Media i don't care i'll jump 1st is the price/content is good enough.
So far all I've heard about new DSTV channels, is a whole lot of talk from MonoChoice, maybe I missed where MonoChoice has marketed its soon to be new channels - other than the smoke & mirrors yapping from MonoChoice about changing channel numbers.

I'm also interested in knowing where you heard about the new channels? I just checked their website and no mention of any new channels, just the channel shuffle on 1 Oct.

Keep us informed :D

Walking on Water
Walking on Water, a niche broadcaster, proposed taking the home entertainment industry "to a higher level by enriching homes and building families on a rock-solid foundation, Jesus Christ". It said it aims to offer a wide range of programmes based on "Christian lifestyle principles", saying that 80% of the South African population is Christian. It plans to deliver its content via satellite.

Please move this thread to the religious debate section.

Thread on DSTV site about the new channels.

MC Merlin (dstv site) said:
It is way too early to talk about the channels in the detail that you are requiring. I can confirm that it will be 5 channels (SET, Animax, One Gospel, a Movie channel - packaged by M-Net, and a lifestyle channel), and all will launch on 1 November. The timing is still being tweaked.
The detail of the channels are still being finalised hence it is still too early to talk about this.

So if I want to subscribe to all I would need like 5 decoder thingys  Gonna need a moerese big TV cabinet now :D not to mention a place to keep all the cables, will I need 5 sat dishes as well. :p

As for the small piece of the pie, Nochoice serves a fraction of the entire population. There is a huge pie to be had.

I hope one of those pieces of pie have Sc-Fi.
I'll go with that piece :D

Unless it's telscum's piece, in which case it will be cr@p anyway, and probably get billed by the minute!

"In anticipation of competition, the company is revamping its content by signing new exclusive TV rights."

Typical isn't it - dont offer anything new - just tie up the **** we already have.

@ Bernie - go Dreambox or the like. 1 STB to handle them all.

I hope "walk on water" has parental control...

Anyways, I will go with the one that has the SciFi Channel - and the REAL lineup, not the bastardised version with ST and B-Rate movies DSTV force fed us.

IMO WoW is most likely to fail as it only caters to people who actually want to be brainwashed with content limited by the narrow mindset of Christian extremists, which means that it will have an extremely small [niche] market and consequently probably unsustainable as a business.

What I don't understand, is why !CASA decided to violate the constitutional rights of other religions by only licensing WoW, were there no other religiocentric PayTV applicants catering to other religions, or is it just Christian extremists that applied?

I dunno. Religious TV is HUUUUGE in the USA. But they don't rely on subscriptions so much as donations and marketing (Pieces of the one true cross anyone?). And I guess not having to pay tax helps.

I guess the other religions already worked out that its not a feasible business model in SA at least :D
