Imagine Uncapped Feedback

bekdik/froot: Which speed test is that, please? Is it something specific to IS/Imagine?

For comparison (4mb/s line, MWeb uncapped):

Please wait testing speed now...

Start Time: 22:35:20
End time: 22:35:21
IP Address: x.x.x.x
Download Size: 409600 bytes
Time Delta: 1.0399549007416 seconds
Download Speed: 385 KBytes/s
Line Speed: 3080 kbits/s

My MWeb :( 4meg.

IS ADSL Local Speed Test to Internet Solutions New York Data Centre
Please wait testing speed now...

Start Time: 23:06:54
End time: 23:07:25
Download Size: 819200 bytes
Time Delta: 30.8543100357 seconds
Download Speed: 26 KBytes/s
Line Speed: 208 kbits/s

IS ADSL Local Speed Test to Internet Solutions Rosebank Data Centre
Please wait testing speed now...

Start Time: 22:48:18
End time: 22:48:20
IP Address: 41.132.159.97
Download Size: 409600 bytes
Time Delta: 1.1450300216675 seconds
Download Speed: 349 KBytes/s
Line Speed: 2792 kbits/s

Is there a test IS account I could check the speedtest on?

I reckon i'm using less data per month now than I was using on a capped telkom line with 5gigs!!!

It's just too slow to download anything, watching a simple youtube video takes up to an hour to buffer...

It's really infuriating.

@Redeemer30, more of an isolated case im afraid, if you check the MWEB feedback threads, the guys who have been with them for 2 months are complaining about line speeds, but for people who were stuck with IS, the line speeds are a HUGE upgrade.

I used more data on MWEB in a week then I did on IS in a month (literally). I would recommend giving MWEB a call and getting someone to look into it before you switch because at this time, you're not going to find anything on IS that's any better!

Thanks ppedrick wow a lot of info. I see that some resellers are selling semi-shaped uncapped from IS, is this possible ?
Well at the moment mweb is not looking like they are interested in helping with the slow speeds, so I might have to look at IS :)
If anyone has any more info or help on what service is best including speeds would be great.
Thanks

Hey Redeemer - the IS semi-shaped is where the ISP buys 'per GB' and then sell you the product as uncapped.
They have the capability to alter your line-speed from 128k up to 4MB and shaping in 5 levels of severity... we are staying well away from this product and are recommending that everyone else does to. It should not be the responsibility of a reseller to decide how good your line is... that's a Tier 1's job. Otherwise, you will have a system that is open to too much abuse and having businesses selling 'cheap uncapped' when it actually isn't being bought as uncapped... which they can then throttle and shape the **** out of it.

If you are to stay with uncapped then make sure that you use the IS Uncapped Basic or MWeb account... otherwise buy capped accounts. It's much better in teh long runand you also know what you're getting.

I'd also take on board randomguy's post. He's been feeding back here a lot and sometimes it's better-the-devil-you-know. Despite the fact I don't want to lose a customer, until the dust settles and also until we can sell the MWeb product, you have to go with the better service.

Afrihost latency is a bit hectic at the moment but they admitted to having a problem and they said they are busy looking into it. I might cancel my uncapped just for a short while until the good latencies are back in gear..

This is because of the shaping levels and the fact that they buy per GB... see above... how can you really provide an uncapped service when you do not buy the product as such. Don't get me wrong, I'm not slating Afrihost as they are clearly a large and successful business. However, I am quesitoning the business ethics of this one product. It's too simple to pull the wool over people's eyes in this industry and clarity is much more important than anything else right now.

You need to know which 'IS product' you are buying and IS also need to ensure that their brand name is not tainted by handing power over to ISPs. I am really hoping that the 'per GB as uncapped' product dies a death very soon so that IS concentrate on providing one decent service, rather than continuing to try and hide behind it's resellers.

Peter Pedrick, what is the current expectancy of performance and speed currently ? i thought i got better speeds trying out age of conan's updater around 2 am this morning :).

Very true what Peter says, however, Mwebs customer service doesn't hold a flame to Imagines though... when / if Imagine start reselling Mweb products, I will definitely be switching back.

I am really not a fan of Mwebs strange billing system and their customer service turn arounds are shocking!

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY, REALLY wish I could tell you Necuno.
Some people are over the moon and have been constantly over 50% line speed since they took up the product. Others, are desperate because the speeds fluxuate from 5-50%... We really can't explain it, beyond supposing the usual Telkom copper line, DSLAM, ESR, ATM, IPC issues - or the network setup after IPC with IS.

We've tried mapping out people's locations but we don't yet have the customer base to do this... I'm not sure if even MWeb have it. I tried to get IS interested and involved in going this but noone got back to me and you can be sure that Telkom wouldn't even acknowledge my existence.

So, all I can say is expect it to be about 30% of line speed for the download protocols and systems e.g. RapidShare on HTTP - and 50% on FTP and similar and 80% on Email and web. Local latency of around 80ms-200ms and Europe around 200-500ms.

However, I really wish that I could confirm this but it changes for different people at different times and the fluxuations are unpredictable. Although, thanks to some of you guys, we've noticed that there are destinct changes at 7am, 7pm and midnight... however, we can't confirm that either as some of our test accounts don't show that!

Bloody frustrating... :(

Maybe other people can feedback beter on this...?

well thanks for replaying. we then see how it goes today/weekend :).

Thanks for the help :)
So Peter as I understand it Imagine is working towards reselling mweb and then being the technical support for this product. Would that mean that imagines techs have direct control of those accounts or will it still be up to mweb to troubleshoot ?

Sorry for all the questions just trying to feed the old grey matter with as much info to make a concise decision on which package as well as reseller to go with.

Ask away! I'm very keen to let everyone know how the industry has and does work.:D

What happens is that we essentially link our computers with the providers(Tier 1's/IS/MWeb/VBetc) to allow authentication. With that we can see and monitor you accounts and do minor surgery... We supply 1st line support and soon as the system develops in to a network issue then our techies escalate the issues with MWeb's/IS's/VBs etc etc. They then take it up and fix the more serious parts to it all.

We can also add our own network services on top of this and put it all through our own Control Panel and systems.

This is essentailly what all the big names... including MWeb... have been doing for years. Pretending it's their own!
MWeb just got annoyed with the resale market and bought their own bandwith and systems... and became a 'regional Tier 1' provider.

Imagine is a Tier 2 provider because we can combine all company's products and mix then with our own to produce the best products for the market. We have our own network and infrastructure system that allow us to service large business as well as the home user. There are several companies around like us... but not who you think!

Other companies out there don't even do that and I don't think really should have a Tier classification. They are just rebranding and marketing arms for other people products... Resellers essentially. You might be surprised who falls in to that category!

Edit to previous post.... back to slow speeds. Think IS realised they opened the taps.

what would make me really happy is that steam would go more than 40KBps.

Meh.... speeds are horrible today. Been jumping around today.
Steam really struggling to work, either works okay, or not at all.
Only getting a total of around 20KBps today.
:(
