Import tax on tablet?

My friend and I are looking to both import a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition from Amazon using myUS to ship it. The total cost for both tablets is $1000 and shipping is around $60 (sending both together).

Does anyone know how much import tax/customs fees we would pay for the package?
Can I avoid some fees by sending it as gift?

Vat is charged at 14% on 110% of the value of the products + a R18-R30 odd clearance fee if it comes through the postal system. If it gets cleared by a courier ... ad a zero to the clearance fee. Assuming that SARS inspects the package and they charge 0% duty thereon.

SARS can be very creative, especially if goods are not described properly.

For example, a camera lens can become photographic equipment, attracting much higher duties.
