Important note when upgrading from ADSL to VDSL

Called 10213 for an upgrade but was only successful on the second day after talking to the 4th consultant to get an upgrade from 10Mb ADSL to 20Mb "VDSL". Once the right person dealt with my request the upgrade went through immediately afterwards and I was given an order number. The online chat guys could only help with resetting my port and kept referring me to 10213 for the upgrade and change needed to go onto VDSL. Called 10213 once more after noting I was syncing at 20Mb late on Friday about the VDSL change and they promised to get a technician to call me in this regard as I am still on ADSL.

My setup is ready. DSL-AC52U V/ADSL Router in place with provided VDSL Splitter installed. Aware of the ATM to PTM change on the WAN plus the 835 setting for VLAN ID on the WAN. Waiting for Telkom. ISP says its not their issue to contact Telkom in regards to changing the frequency. Also think the DSL-AC52U can detect the settings necessary.

Haven't been this excited since I went from 56K dialup to ISDN. LOL.Shot2051.jpg

Your upstream should be higher around 5mb. Is it on openserve?

Why is your upstream FastPath?

Yes, Openserve ADSL Pro 300GB Capped. Because I am still ADSL2+? Sorry new to VDSL, notice this thread is coming from 2016 already.:)
Why is your upstream FastPath?
Possibly because of the same answer, connection is still ADSL2+? New to VDSL, still learning. :o

Telkom will never change you from 20mb Adsl to 20mb vdsl. The only way i got vdsl was to upgrade to 40mb which is vdsl. You can then downgrade to 20mn vdsl.

40Mb was my initial request at 10213, phoned today but they say the original order is still being processed, albeit I am on 20Mb since yesterday.

Question: Did Telkom send out someone to change something on the exchange or can this all be done via their network.

Just so everyone knows:
You can use a VDSL filter on an ADSL line as well, been doing it for a couple of months, so if you need to replace the filter, look for a VDSL one so you won't have to get a new one if Telkom finally upgrades you.

Where can I purchase these? Telkom shops don't stock.

Done two upgrades and it's always ADSL. You need to phone technical and ask them to change your profile.

Yes they can, I upgraded from 20m adsl to 20m vdsl to get the better upload speed.

this. There are quite a few people who have been changed from ADSL to VDSL on request if the exchange supports it.

Course they will.

The online checker said I had VDSL available more than a year ago, so I sold my nice TP-Link modem, got a Zyxel VDSL modem and applied for VDSL 20 Mbps. That put me into a months long exchange between Axxess and Telkom, only for it to eventually end on me not having a stable enough line to upgrade, even though SNR was pushing 14dB in Fastpath.

"INF-02 Info - Contact customer - Unable to provide the required speed due to distance from the exchange. Please advise the customer and forward cancel instruction." - Axxess 2017-03-07

Then, a few weeks back, I get an email notification with this:

"Please see response from telkom regarding your upgrade request to 20 meg "Requested speed unachievable due to Speed Limitation :Speed ordered not feasible due to distance limitation" - Axxess 2018-05-21

Next thing Axxess bills me like R18 extra for a 20 Mbps VDSL connection. Shortly after my line goes from about 12 Mbps down 1 Mbps up to 16 Mbps down and 1 Mbps up, still on ADSL. Spoke to an Axxess support person who didn't seem to know much about switching to VDSL. She basically told me it can't be done.

So I contacted TelkomSA via PMs here and eventually got my line both switched to VDSL AND speed upped to 20.4 Mbps down and 1.3 Mbps up, with my pings pretty acceptable!

Terrick from Telkom is always on the ball!

Hi there,
Iknow that VDSL and ADSL works on different frequencies.
is it possible to use a VDSL filter on an ADSL line as well?, What about Telkom upgrading service?
Regards.

There is no difference between an ADSL and a VDSL filter.
VDSL2_frequencies.png

Your POTS section of the filter will just not allow anything higher than about 3.3KHz to 5KHz, while the DSL section of it will block anything under that amount.

VDSL uses ADSL2+'s frequency and more, that's why if you can't get over about 14Mbps, there is no real difference between ADSL2+ and VDSL, and why there is no real difference between ADSL and ADSL2+ at about 8Mbps. The newer technologies do use better modulation though, so they are usually more stable than their predecessor, but the speed would be about the same unless a the edge of their capability (like only getting 18Mbps on ADSL2+ and yet getting 20Mbps easily on VDSL) where the extra frequency can easily be used.

Great information here, guys! Any other things to take into consideration when upgrading from ADSL to VDSL? I'm going to help this lonely chap, later on today, he's arguing that his overall speed has become significantly worse (and connection less stable) since the upgrade, so I'm thinking of troubleshooting the entire setup, all the way from where the signal enters.

Well this was in 2018, we're in 2020 now and ADSL/VDSL is on it's way out ;)

Fibre is the best way forward if available.

Thanks for your quick response mate! Yeah I know, most places I visit have fiber already but this is a kind of old facility where fibre is not yet pulled. So, VDSL is our best option to date!

If you can get VDLS, do it, but I don't know if Telkom still sells it?

Maybe check if you have coverage for LTE?
