Anyone running one of these suckers yet?

I'm looking at doing a upgrade and may either go i7 or dual/quad core - still deciding.

From what I've been reading the i7 rocks - but its not cheap. There's also some uncertainty on the LGA - currently its LGA1366 but there's rumours intel are releasing a LGA1156 for the i7's later on this year.

Now the question is do you go for a duo/quad core, or the i7 of which the standard might be changing this year anyway! :( Which means a new mobo/cpu when you next upgrade anyway.

If you haven't read up about the i7 here's an excellent article on it:

Any thoughts?

Fudzilla did a comparison benchmark between like 12 different cpu setups. They concluded that qx6950 is the best value cpu, still even over i7. But i7 is definitely faster. What do you have going atm?

Core i5 is the "cheaper" version of the Nehalem and uses the LGA1156 socket (two memory channels instead of 3, hence less pins) .
Also i5 does not have QPI

If your going to buy a 9650 you may as well spend the extra for an i7 system.

It is not cheap but performance never is. There are cheap i7 mobo's now for like 3 which is fine and the cpu price for 920 i7 is fine but the ddr3 memory which hits home at like 1.5k for 2gb :).

Or maybe an Opteron if the 35% discount reaches the SA consumer :D

Thanks - i'll have a look at the site.

What do I have now...nothing worth mentioning....3.4 HT and AGP GPU :(

i7 doesn't really seem worth the extra now - the cpu costs, mobo costs and memory costs.

If you shop around you can get 2GB DDR3-1600 for about R 600 a stick with quite reasonable latencies, although some of the "brands" want what you quoted

Show me this 600 bucks for 1600? i can believe 1333 but 16000 is crazy expensive in this country.

It depends on what you want to do hey, the mobo and cpu price is not bad but i think the ddr3 pricing is somewhat inflated :), still 4k cpu, 3.5k mobo and 3k memory is not all that for a blazing fast pc.

I got 6GB DDR-1333 at about R1750 about a month and a half ago. Super Talents of some sort.

i moved from an agp based system to a brand new i7 for about R17,000. I think the same system with 4GB DDR2-800 and Q9450 (possibly 9550) would have been around R15,000.

From where dude? i will not believe until i see it, pics or it never happened.

1750 for 6 gb of 1333? again from where?
