Intel i7 Core - buy now or wait?

Good point - there's never a good time to buy. If you wait it will always be come cheaper.

I think I'm going to go for the Q9650 Core 2 Quad and a Intel DP45SG mobo.

Now to just decide on the GPU :)

1750 for 6 gb of 1333? again from where? Greg remember was when they first came out, mobo's are 2k cheaper and ddr3 is alot cheaper now as well :).

Got one of these, bit finnicky with the memory, but works fine with the super-talent. If you do get one flash it with the latest bios as the shipped version has timing issues (Ver 0112 is current).
 
I am quite glad with my i7 setup.

I currently run the following :

i7 920 / Rampage 2 Extreme ROG / 3 x 2GB Corsair Dominator GT 1866Mhz / 1200w Gigabyte Odin / Gigabyte GTX 295 / WD 300GB Velociraptor /

I think there can be a good time to buy as long as you don't buy the latest products. Wait a bit longer - eg 6 months for a new Intel i7 release and then buy what's currently out now but do it then :). Or, as you said buy the C2Q.
 
The problem is in 6 months there will be another CPU version on the horizon in another 6 months so do you want for that or buy the one you've just waited 6 months for. Wait I'm starting to confuse myself with all this waiting :)



As you said don't buy brand new technology - unless you've got a decent budget.

No, the i7 is a brand new architecture with a memory controller aboard the CPU. There is a big difference between NetBurst (Pentium 4) and Core2Duo and then i7/Nehalem.

You want to get the newest generation but not the earliest iteration thereof. Nehalem will be with us for the next 2-3 years - so buy it when some faster i7's come out, then buy what is offered right now from i7 at discount. This time only comes every 2-3 years for CPUs. For GPUs, every 6 months a new GPU comes out - so it's more difficult there.

For GPUs it's better to buy YESTERDAY'S TOP OF THE RANGE then today's mid-range - if they cost the same.

I purchased them from a friend, he managed to buy a set when the Corsair tranches opened up(on the corsair site), but they only sell in limited numbers currently and only become available once a month or so- then they all sell out within hours.

They are what really makes me the happiest.

This is my only upgrade for the next year or more as the ram and mobo should hold. Only thing I might consider going for is a high spec cpu when they faster ones become less expensive.

I do now, have never before, but for me this hardware is about as "future proof"(in general pc terms knowing the every changing landscape) as I can get. meaning I will still be able to use the self same hardware, and still be right up there in the medium to high end gaming categories.

I will be able to play most of the games that come out at its max or pretty close to.

And also have the means to push my system to keep up.

Considering I have never bothered with running those 3dmark or vantage programs before until now - it should tell you about my systems in the past.

My system is in pieces at the moment seen as I have sold off my haf chassis, hunting a new chassis that's mobile enough and small enough to fit my fill height gtx 295 and the full atx mobo.
 
a word of advice on the sourcing of the goodies - you can have a full i7 setup for under R7.5k it will be a 920 cpu , either xfx , biostar or dfi mobo and some super talent 3x2gb 1333's

If you are happy to settle for a used cpu , I am certian if you keep a look out you will find one for about R3k.

That's why I sold my QX9650 @R4k , I managed to pick up a week old i7 920 for R2.5k.

So I am a happy chappy.
