Intel i7 Core - buy now or wait?

From where dude? i will not believe until i see it, pics or it never happened.

1750 for 6 gb of 1333? again from where? Greg remember was when they first came out, mobo's are 2k cheaper and ddr3 is alot cheaper now as well :).

Yeah but a C2Q (so change mobo, cpu and ram) was pricing at about 2 grand less. was a no brainer for me.
 
i got a little bit annoyed at first when i saw current prices but then remembered this is the thing with computer parts. you buy what you buy when you buy and as long as at the time it was a good deal, live with it.
 
milomak what are the specs of your R17000 machine? That's not a bad price.
 
just blows me away that people, in this day and age, are still prepared to pay for a new generation intel chip and mobo, and then put in crap RAM

I mean what the hell is the point...

Ok so what is wrong with it :rolleyes:

Works fine in my mobo and supports 7-7-7-21 latencies at the rated speed DDR3-1600 + it supports XMP


remember there are two primary manufacturers of the physical DDR3 chips.
 
I think the problem is too many people think that just because one stick of memory costs twice as much that is better.

Tests have proven there is as little as 1% performance between expensive and cheap brands. In my experience is you buy the cheapest ram you can find because at the end of the day it is all the same stuff, i am talking 1333 as opposed to 1666 i am talking ocz as opposed to jetram, buy jetram slap on some heatsinks and booya your good to go.

You know how edgars sells shirts at 200 bucks and mr price at 50, both are good quality but people think the 200 buck shirt they are wearing is better because of the price :p

As always you do get the cheap "lemon" but in my case I checked the timings and speeds between the options and went for the Super-Talent.

Exactly. That's why generic is ftw unless you're trying to beat a 3dmark 06 score.
 
Read through the Fudzilla article - very informative and has just about made my mind up. With the memory, mobo and cpu costing more than the quad, and you probably need a lot of cooling for the i7 - its supposed to really run hot.

From Fudzilla:

While the i7 is the fastest CPU it does need about 50% more power compared to a Q9650. If you check the efficiency you see that the Q9 series has the best performance/consumption ratio. Intel claimed any 2% performance improvement does only cost 1% more power-consumption, but we clearly see they failed.

We think the Q9 series is the best CPU you can buy, you don't even need to change your memory and still save money on the board. Besides, DDR2 memory is still cheaper, because the 1.65V DDR3 kits have a price-premium and you don't need massive cooling for the CPU. Only professionals where time is essence can profit from the faster i7, but even hardcore gamers can leave it alone. The Q9650 is available for about €285,- and works at 3GHz while the cheapest Nahalem Core i7 920 at 2.66GHz costs under €250,-. A Q9650 is much easier to overclock and you have not to calculate any internal clocks and memory overclocking also works much better.

From what I've been reading the i7 rocks - but its not cheap. There's also some uncertainty on the LGA - currently its LGA1366 but there's rumours intel are releasing a LGA1156 for the i7's later on this year.

Now the question is do you go for a duo/quad core, or the i7 of which the standard might be changing this year anyway! :( Which means a new mobo/cpu when you next upgrade anyway.

Wait a bit till i7 becomes a bit cheaper, then buy. Buying something brand new is always expensive.

Buy the CPU and mobo then. Don't ever buy a mobo and pay extra because you'll think you'll be able to upgrade in a year or two. It never works like that, that future mobo will always have some advantages over your current overpriced purchase - no matter what. Computers are not an investment, they're not gold or wine - they get cheaper with time.
 
Well said Peter......you want to game buy an x****, you want to bench stay with PC with the added bonus of games.
