Interesting idea to "share" uncapped accounts...

Just thought of something, would like to hear your inputs on this. I don't know much about the implementation of something like this, so please advise accordingly if you spot a mistake.

Uncapped accounts usually only support 1 connection at a time. Suppose the following: 5 or 10 people got together, purchased 1 uncapped account and let it run at somebody's residence on a linux machine (the provider). They all join a WUG in their area and use the following methodology to download large files:

a) Send download request to the provider
b) Receive download finished notice from provider
c) Provider uploads downloaded file to the WUG
d) Requester then downloads the file from the WUG

It ought to be cheaper. Anybody think of or implement this yet? Considerations?

That would probably be illegal because that one ADSL connection would be available to 5-10 different premeses, which is illegal.

EDIT: Wait, I misread your post. Hmmm... that would be quite a mission to set up or for the person who acts as provider.

That is basically how WUGs work anyway. You would not be allowed to feed the internet connection itself over the WUG, but moving the already completed downloads is not a problem. It is basically just another form of downloading and sharing.

As Garyvdh pointed out, the WUGs work that way - but with human intervention.

I'm sure I could automate it some way...so that there is no person needed to "run" everything like downloading and sharing the requested file.

someone on the network wrote me a program
(i have an astraweb account)
it was automated to the point:
people could add nzbs from anywhere on the internet to my ftp server (using their wug connection to upload it to my server)
my pc would then automatically start the download
then unrar it when complete and move it to another folder
the program the guy wrote for me would then use ctorrent compiled for windows to make a .torrent
then the .torrent was automatically uploaded to the torrent site using curl
it was then loaded into utorrent automatically and seeded
at which point any member ont he wug could get the file from me using ONLY their wug connection to me
(at no point anywhere did the user have access to use my internet)

reason i stopped this: i couldnt afford the internet costs involved
reason i couldnt: no one gives a **** to help pay, as theres always someone else that eventually downloads it anyway

it would have to be through a DC++ server anyway, I've never created a torrent much less coded an app to do it for me.

Its easy to do if youre living close to someone you want to share with.

But honestly, I wouldnt share it with more than 1 person. 4 Meg is already barely enough b/w for me to do streaming, and you can bet that everyone using the account is going to rape it 24/7.

Rather just share the account with someone via DSL. Ie, you take one week, your friend takes the next week...etc etc.... Then you can atleast split cost.

It's quite easy to do if you have a fixed IP uncapped account, don't mind a speed slowdown ( the "A" in ADSL ), and have enough local bandwidth - just run a proxy server.

With the WUG setup don't you just make certain directories/drives on your computer shared? If so, you could just downlaod to those points. The notify part would be the tricky one. But then I suppose you could add a text file showing what the full size of each download is. so whoever wants to download could open the text file and see whether the download is complete or not?

I have something like this running, not quite as fancy with automated goodies...

A simple uncapped account, and we share the cost 4 ways.

They pretty much all want what I want in terms of games and the occasional movie or series. Other than that, they send a request or two through and and I queue it.

Works quite well actually!
