For the last several weeks I have been having issues with my ADSL connection at home, where the connection fails, usually at least once but often up to 3 or 4 times a day. Sometimes a simple restart of the router fixes the problem, but other times the connection will remain down for up to an hour at a time. During these periods, my dynamic IP, the gateway IP and the DNS address are all 0.0.0.0. According to my router's control panel the line is still synched (but it seems suspect because it always says exactly "DownStream Connection Speed 4096 kbps; UpStream Connection Speed 512 kbps" and I was under the impression that in the real world these numbers are likely to vary.

Anyway, I'm not the most tech savvy guy, so was hoping to get some troubleshooting advice from you dudes.

Here's some relevant information:

ISP - Mweb (4mb uncapped, shaped)
Router - Netgear DG834GUv5 with crappy TKV6.00.26 Telkom firmware
Line Attenuation - 47.5 db 23.5 db
Noise Margin - 12.5 db 13 db (these vary a bit - downstream noise margin's been as low as 10 in the minute or so I was looking)
MTU - 1492

I connect wirelessly, but my wife's connected via cable and we both experience this.

Any ideas on what the problem could be? I suspect some kind of DNS issue with the ISP...

this is tad low you need 12 dba to probably sync , if drops under you get problems, try better router to get better noise snr, or let telkom check it out for you.

As I said though, my router seems to indicate that I'm still synched.

I believe that Siemens routers are a little better with SNR and attenuation?

Just got off the line with Mweb - I've had 20 disconnects today so far according to them.

Rain.
Water.
Manholes flooded.
Telkom cable joints corroded.
Problems.

Report your voice line faulty (crackle, lots of noise, etc) and tell them to send out the cable techies!!
