Internet constantly dropping - sync issue or something else?

Hi all,

I live in Constantia and recently my line has started dropping like crazy. I'm talking once every 10 mins it goes for another 10, then suddenly starts up again.

According to my stats it shouldn't be desyncing like this (I only run 384kb but want to upgrade to 4mb and can support it). Has anyone else had this? Should I call Telkom? My data is from BTWeb.

We've been having the same in Illovo, Jo'burg ever since IS' network went down last Thursday. On the Business ADSL service. On Friday, I could see packets dropping at jinx using a traceroute.

TBH it has gotten a little better today. I called Telkom and they have lodged a fault.

Pity 'cos I was going to upgrade to 4mb goodness but I need to be sure first.
 
You might need to get a better ADSL modem for 4Mbps, because your downstream (DS) noise margin will drop by 12dB and the upstream (US) noise margin will drop by like 4-5dB, and I would suggest that you try and maintain an SNR margin of 12dB or higher.
Your line attenuation (loss due to the distance to the DSLAM) is low enough for like a 6Mbps connection if you have a decent modem.
 
We just phoned telkom twice now because of the same issue. I don't know what ping and pong are but you would be online for a minute or 2 then offline for a minute or 2 and so it carried on for a week. I got so p%#@ed off with trying to post stuff that I phoned them and the one guy said he would test the line and phone me back and I am still waiting and that was about an hour ago. The other person tested the exchange and said I should not have anymore problems and so far since putting down the phone it went off once.
