intl intermittent problems

Greetings

Ok...

I have tried from my main OpenWeb account and my backup Axxess account and neither work.

Well, the OpenWeb one connects and nothing else. The Axxess one allows me to connect to some sites and services (like VNC) via IP address. I can connect to my work via VNC and from my work (directly connected to IS) every thing is working perfectly and I can connect to all sites.

But if I try to go to 196.23.168.147 in my browser (the IP address for www.google.co.za ), nothing happens. When I put that IP into the browser at work, it goes straight to Google.

I have tried using Google's free DNS servers (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) and OpenDNS's (208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220) to no avail.

So what has gone wrong?

Posted using my iPhone on Vodacom (which seems to be working fine)

With my 2 cents, I have a few ISP accounts and it seems the different accounts have access to different sites/places.

For example on the one (Afrihost 1GB free) I can access things like MyBB and the Europe Newsdemon but not the US Newsdemon, while on the Afrihost 384K Uncapped/Axxess 4m Uncapped it's reversed, I can't view MyBB and can only connect to the US Newsdemon and not the Europe Newdemon. All seems very strange and started abruptly some time ago.

Resetting the router and trying different DNS servers didn't help.

This forum was dead on Afrihost (DSL) but is ok on Cell C on my USB dongle ?????????

This is very interesting... Going to add my observations and wild speculation.

I have access to some traffic monitoring graphs (not for Seacom or consumer ISPs, sadly) and from what I can see the issue doesn't _seem_ to be with Seacom. However, pings from one network at a local INX to MyBroadband suddenly spiked sometime after midnight... as if traffic to MyBB was being routed internationally rather than locally.

Based on the information at hand, this seems to be some sort of routing/peering failure. Given the number of folks reporting problems with IS accounts I would guess a routing issue on the IS network, but some have reported issues on WebAfrica as well. Makes me wonder if there isn't a bigger issue at a major peering point / Internet exchange.

Well it does the same on telkom (saix sat3) so it is not just IS

my openweb went at midnight.....using telkom and it is loading some pages......had a huge problem getting this site to load....

internet is flying on vodacom using cellphone as access point :)

so definitely not affecting cell networks so must be localised to adsl exchange in JHB/Pretoria

telkom also seems to be working again also on every site

Openweb uncapped, can't connect to giganews US.
Can't connect to any 'Real' service .... Steam is also failing me (been trying to run a game for the last 10 mins)

Update to my last post,,,

I've noticed that right after changing to another ISP account (eg Axxess 4m Uncapped) I can connect to all newsdemon servers and download happily, but if I stop it after a while it won't start again. Done this twice now to make sure it wasn't a fluke so it's really strange, as if it works fine for a moment after connecting to the new ISP account and continues to work as long as I don't disconnect and try to reconnect to newsdemon etc.

PS, TwinDucT, Don't you wish all games required a constant internet connection at times like this lol. Yay for Diablo 3.

Considering this is still only on the 2nd page and also considering that 99% of the people on this forum only come here to moan, I'm guessing not many people can browse currently. Maybe Malema took down more than just twitter. Ddint they say this would happen if he nationalised the internets?

Its the future!!!

Its an IS related problem
Local Google Server at IS was down on Axxess, could access it on Afrihost
MyBB accessed on Telkom
Can access 8.8.8.8 Google DNS server but thats all , all international web browsing via
IS is not working

... Or its 02h00 in the morning and people are in bed like they're supposed to be? >P

I am in CT.

Bizarrely, Nedbank's NetBank site works, and it was not in any of my local caches, as they have all been rebooted (router and PC). Then I went off the page, now it is down again.

BTW, I can still VNC into my work PC via IP address and from there access the Internet and my work connects to the 'Net with an IS business account.

As others has said it's not just IS, I have multiple accounts some over IS and some over SAIX and all of them are having problems, just different problems at different times.

Ok...

Just spoke to Backbone Support at IS. Ticket 1-1160768349 has been opened as a Major National Outage and IS & Telkom engineers are working on the problem. As yet, the call center has not been told what the cause of the outage is, so no ETA to a fix is possible.

So obviously this means that Space Pirate Amazon Ninja Catgirl Nazi Terrorists are to blame ;)

I guess we will all have to go to sleep early (wait... what?) and let the techies have a sleepless night. We will have to wait for morning to see if it is fixed...

Luckily my telkom account is working perfectly so don't have to sleep early
