iOS 5 details

I just installed iOS 5 Beta on my device. So far I really like the changes. My phone does feel a bit laggy but that's because it's still in beta.

Please do not ask me how I installed it and got it working, that's my business :) and no, I'm not a developer :)

I will tell u that u need to install iTunes. 10.5 beta to install ios 5 beta and u need to get activated. Again, don't ask me how to get activated :)

Yep. But we got Wifi sync. And free cloud backups!! I'm so amped ><

I know this will sound like a fan post but its not meant as one. I really loved my iPhone, I got my 1st one when it was just plain iPhone 3g. They only reason I looked at Android was the fact that I am running Linux as my desktop and hated iTunes with a passion. I could live with jailbreaking my phone and getting all the "Android" like functions from widgets to themes on my phone. I just could not live without my music.

I am use to buying my music from all types of web sites not only iTunes store and I wanted to just be able to copy a new album onto my phone without any hassles also I dont want to be limited in sync'ing my music from one PC. If I bought the album on my netbook I had to wait till I got home to move the songs to my music collection start-up virtual box and use iTunes to sync my old playlist with the new album added.

If they just allowed me to browse my music via WiFi or even USB and copy the songs I want into my phones library, I would probably never have even bought a Android phone.

Dont want to be a party-pooper but I still think the IOS rocks. Have been spending some time on Android the last few weeks & its GUI is disappointing. IOS much more user-friendly & personally I am looking forward to IOS5!

Well, iOS looks pretty crappy with just a bunch of folders on the home screen. Guess since it's an app-driven UI, not gonna change anytime soon.

Is that what you found more user-friendly? :p

Home sharing is a feature added to iOS4.3 and above and does just that... You can basically authorize any 5 computers and share the music between them over a wifi network. So for example at home I have my music library stored on my desktop, 25000 songs/300GB's worth. My iPad and laptop are authorized computers, iPhone automatically shares the library without counting towards the 5 authorized machines. There is also the option to drag and copy any of the material on the desktop to the local library on any one of the authorized machines..

There was speculation that iOS5 would include "live" icons, so weather icon would actually display the temperature for the day, ipod icon would display artwork of the last album played, photos icon the last pic captured, maps icon would display your current location. Currently the only live icon is the calender icon.

I would imagine widgets to be a game breaker when it comes to battery life though and at barely a day under moderate to heavy use that could also be a deterrent.

I know there is work arounds like the one you mention even if it uses that crap platform that is called iTunes but it was a little to late for me. I now have over R2000 of software on my Android platform so switching back will be a costly affair.

At least it is something future iPhone users don't have to worry about.

Gees the software on your device is worth almost as much as the device itself!! A fairly significant investment!!

A bugbear for many a user is iTunes, but personally, I love it...

Yes I know its a bit of money, but then its scary how fast the odd little 1$ here and $5 there adds up. I did buy my 1st Android device last year in March when I was still in NZ so always had full access to paid software.

I also own almost all the Gameloft titles, not to even mention other games. The one thing I love about iOS and Android markets is that its like Steam and once you bought something its licensed against your account and not your device/s. So I look at the purchases as future investments.

I do own 3 Android devices and 3 iOS ones, my next Android is on order so R2000+ is not much at the end of the day, oh and I have about R600 of iOS software :)

Nice collection of goodies!!! So what would your next Android device on order be?? I'm guessing a HTC flyer... Or SGS2..?

Eee pad transformer.

Will see how it compares to my iPad.
Uh cool, enjoy it...

Personally I don't get these tablets.. Got an iPad which the wife and kids use it to watch series and that's about it... Imagine that..? Got a 50" plasma in the bedroom but the wife insists on watching her series on the iPad...

Elimentals, you sort of hit the nail on the head. I am an apple user, and have the whole apple environment going (Iphone 4, Ipad 2, Macbook Pro, Apple TV, Time Capsule) which works great together, no problems. I also have tons of Apps, and Music which I have bought through iTunes.

The net result is that while I love my devices, the truth is, the competition would have to be light years ahead before I would change. Simply put, I have too much invested in Apple, and the cost of switching systems is way too costly.

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy with what I have, and would probably choose to go this route all over again at the moment. Problem is my spending habits have removed any other option from my table for now. While it can happen on other devices, like Android, it is far more likely to happen with apple products simply because of how they set up their business model (Closed system)

That is why I was actually surprised that Apple didn't announce anything in the line of Android@Home but I guess its still early days and Apple will release there version soon enough.

Also personally cant wait for Windows 8 and Microsoft's answer to the mobile world. The more companies that run for no 1 spot and trying to win us with innovation the more value we get for our money spent.

The only thing that keeps me from buying an iPhone at this moment is that I can't use my phone as a flash disk. This might seem insignificant but I have a 16gig SGS and I use my phone to copy data between different pcs at work and home. And I just can't have itunes on all of them. Also android@home might keep me on the android ship for longer, as my decisions are basically to choose between android and BB (even if their devices aren't up to standard, I mean to you really need your phone to be that powerful?)

There is an app for that, problem is it needs to be on the PC http://www.macroplant.com/phonedisk/

I am sure there is others as well, also I have seen one that runs on the phone.

If there is one that runs on the phone it will be okay, but having to install software on all the PCs is just not on for me. Anyway, will first have to see how the next iPhone compares to the SGS2 and the Sensasion. But as I said, the specs doesn't really bother me all that much, all the phones currently are much faster than I need them to be.
