iOS 8 Wi-Fi calling in SA

Are they referring to the calling via MacBook/iPad here or something else all together?

The way I read that article is much like VOIP over GSM? Which isn't what I picked up from the keynote at all.
 
The network Three in the UK is just about to release a multi-platform app for wifi calling. It's already available to Android users as a trial and should release as a full version for iOS and Android at the end of the month.

That's what this article is about.

When local networks were asked whether they plan to support Wi-Fi calling, Vodacom said that they are investigating it but have nothing specific to share at this stage.

MTN SA’s Mike Fairon, head of products and solutions, said that they are planning the test scenarios around this feature in conjunction with Apple.

Im not clear on how this work? Will you call from your wifi connection to a gsm cell number, so essentially its free?

VOIP. It's not free, but will most certainly be cheaper than GSM calls. You might get free wifi calling minutes or something like that.
 
This looks like a threat to the operators' income, don't know if they are too happy about it
 
Nope.. It's VoIP but not as you think..ie this is not Skype like!

Essentially they are routing mobile calls via the wifi with full hardware & os support on both ends. This should allow for cheaper calls and artificially extended the range of mobile telephony where wifi is present. Eg in my office there next to no mobile signal but we do have guest wifi.

With this solution the phone will still receive calls albeit not via traditional XG/GSM channel.

I think SMS is also supported and with this obviously roaming becomes cheap to make/recv calls via wifi. Awesome!

BTW this feature was added to android as well but how many networks have used it as a result of their client base? So yes.. iOS later to the party but the one to make it happen
 
I think it's going to be interesting to see coatings mobile networks in SA charge for this. Why?

If they making their way to VoLTE then this is would make use of a lot infrastructure and basically allow their user base to use the phone where they would not due to infrastructure & license/frequency limitations.

So besides roaming where they would lose out(debatable as overseas operators have control u know..), though I'm sure people will buy it as a solution instead of traditional roaming.. In the local scenario they should offer it as a free service +/- maybe cheaper if routed via wifi.

After all no radio license cost, no bandwidth/backhaul tho still ip network conn, less contention on network resource etc
