Doesn't iPad have better aps compared to other tablets?

Define better?

I don't see any PPPOE or firewall applications in the App store not to mention SSH encrypted remote controls for Amarok or SMS text tab that allow you to text from your tablet linked to your phone.....

Dumb question : but I see I've registered a SA account with my iPod, so guessing easy enough to change.

My question is - should I see a download button? ;)
Or does it appear when the iPad is connected?

EDIT : Angry Birds and the Steve Jobs Biography not on SA apps store?
You can keep your SA account, and register another account in the US; basically to get this domes you need to do the following (not my rules ;-):
http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/create-itunes-account-access-usonly-contents-credit-card/
1. Sign out go your SA account i.e. log off
2. Switch to the US store
3. Follow the instruction in the URL from creating account (you must try to download a free app, this is what allows to avoid using your credit card; which btw they wouldn't accept as they check that the credit card ties up with the US street address you will be providing)

Then once the account is set up you can buy things via two methods:
1. Buy gifts cards (http://www.epointsdelivered.com/ This is one I've been using, Jessica, the owner of this service is very helpful and reliable, but as with anything like this there are many alternative sites to buy from, and I'm pretty sure there will be many suggestions on this forum)
2. Something which I haven't tried and saw with sending this reply is what appears to be a bypass around the physical address checks that Apple does with payment details, it's included as an option in the URL I provided. http://www.hopshopgo.com/ -- I have no experience with this option, so please take care if you try it. I might be trying it soon, and will provide feedback.

FYI, you can load the serial number of the gift card using the redeem button in the iTunes store, basically you enter the number and your password and the balance is adjusted to reflect this on your account.

Ok once your US account is set up, you start buying / downloading apps that you need (incl. free ones). Basically just click on either the price or the button free to start the download.

The part that puts this on your iPad will only be visible once you plug in the iPad (but remember with ios5 you can buy everything on the iPad if you like or via iTunes either through manual sync).

No games are on the SA store (hence angry birds missing), also most of the books -- this is due to the fact that our lazy and incompetent gov has decided to not link up with the international ratings system i.e. they believe they can do a better job :wtf: Basically what this means for the authors / games creators is that they need to pay +-R5000 to get their material rated for release in SA, how initials authors can afford and how many will just avoid the marker entirely.

btw I have no problem with the name :D

For the techy user, most of the real powerhouse stuff will only be available via a JB. Once you JB there is almost no restriction as most Unix style programs run quite ok (usually after a quick compile); however the UI based stuff will require Xcode 4 and some development.

In general you are correct i.e. there are more commercially rich applications built to take advantage of the larger screen.

The Android stores sadly don't have the same level of quality checks, hence it generally takes time to find something good. There is definitely more apps specifically designed to take advantage of the iPad screen size.

If however you have an Android I'd suggest you look at the Amazon app stores which imo is better controlled and generally avoids a lot of the crap apps.

When I ordered my iPad i downloaded all my apps onto my pc before I even got it, saved the waiting for it to download while I was trying to play on It! Haha
I was the same when I got it :D
With iOS5 you can now download and play at the same time, even better :D:D

The main disadvantage of the iPad is that it brings out the worst in Apple haters. Apple should be forced to attach a warning label on the iPad. iPad owners are at risk of being abused (verbal abuse almost guaranteed, behind their backs mostly).

:D

LOL: For me to love it and never even look at Android they should have made only 2 changes.

1. Universal file system.
2. Easy installation from local drive.

So I cant say I hate the iPad, as its just 2 small things that I really dislike about the product.

Whoa! Thanks!

I'm going to have to do this at home!

So one doesn't buy apps like a normal store? You need vouchers and then buy apps?

You know what I'm thinking, right? ;)

Only problem with this is you always lag behind latest OS, well unless you like running tethered.

Hardly matters. I'm still putting along on 4.2 just fine. If you need to update for some reason it's simple with iTunes.

...Better than a new device being released every few months.

The SA part works just like any store.

The controls on the US store prevent the use of a credit card (even paypal); basically the fake address you use must match the one registered on your credit card, which of course ours won't. The media owners are the cause of the rest of the restrictions i.e. they have chosen to license their media via territory specific licensing i.e. in SA there are companies like e.g. Ster kinekor and Nu Metro that own the rights to distribute this in SA and they don't want Apple taking away their profits.

So in the end Apple had to respect these agreements otherwise, they would not be allowed access to the content. The restrictions on where the customer is based + validation with credit card is the way in which Apple has promised to control that only people within a particular territory will have access; and this is not even touching on the complexity of taxes (e.g. SARS)
BTW this is exactly the same type of limitations placed on Amazon, or other global players.

btw recommend you must register your fake address in a state where there is no extra tax charged on electronic purchases e.g. California

The vouchers are the way around all this legal crap; you just need to make sure you don't get ripped off with excess prices for these. The link I gave is very consistent (used for +-3 years), and I have even been able at times to buy below cost price e.g. $95 for $100 voucher. These bargains tend to come at US holidays; easter, thanks giving, etc

So yes you are correct; you need to buy the voucher 1st, redeem within the store and then buy your apps, music, movies, books, etc...

Btw with iCloud you really don't need to be concerned about backing up anything i.e. Apple backs up everything in the cloud as part of the service (no extra charge). This is the main reason why i no longer purchase any music locally, second reason is that no local store has the quantity and variety of stuff in the iTunes store.

That's the reason I chose to stop getting locked into the JB option. I spent around $250 and now own the majority of the apps I'll ever need, except every now and then there is a really good game I can't resist buying.

The only thing I really miss from the Cydia store is SBSettings and WIFI sharing on the iPad (pissed off at Apple  for not including something like this)

My use of JB is not because of piracy, in fact I have no pirated apps. Its more linked to Open Source applications like VLC and XBMC, oh an also themes so guess I am stuck at older versions till untethered gets released :)

See complaint no 2

May I answer this is in a truthful, yet nicely worded and positive toned post? ;)

I have never seen the need to use VLC on the iPad (screen is not really suited to movies vs TV, maybe on the occasional flight I guess), on the mac with (DivX, Perian and Flip4Mac), I hardly ever find the need to use VLC.

Wrt to XBMC; since I moved to streaming all my content I found I didn't need this, and the content was only taking up unnecessary disk space. Basically now I stream pretty much everything I need from Hulu, Netflix and BBC iPlayer.
Of course you need a fast link > 1 Mbps and unlimited bandwidth, but its a changer; nothing quite like watching what you want at any time.

Fyi I have a mac mini that drives my TV + installed an app called Remote buddy that allows me to drive the entire set up via Apple remote + VPN service (to make it appear as if I'm in the US, UK, ...) + some fairly simple Applescripts to link everything together i.e. simplify the start / stop of VPN connections to make it simple enough for my partner.

... but by most accounts Techie users generally prefer the freedom a JB affords, if that the case? ... then by all reports you shouldn't have to wait too long for an iOS5 version.

Dolby use the Kenyan iTunes store with your SA credit card to avoid all the voucher stuff.

I do however have a solution for the woes of those people that don’t want to buy iTunes vouchers and buy in the US store: Move to Kenya.

I was going to check if Kazakhstan had a games category when I saw that there was a Mac App Store for Kenya.

So I created an Apple ID for the Kenyan store, ticked the box to accept the terms and conditions, used my credit card billing address for the street address (but filled in Nairobi as the city). I dug up a Nairobi post code and phone number, although I doubt that they will check the phone number as long as it conforms to their numbering system – three digit code and seven digit number.

For the credit card details, I entered my SA card details and then clicked ‘Buy’ for the US$4.99 version of Angry Birds.

Lo and behold, a short while later, the pigs were getting it from the birds.
