While we're on the topic of disadvantages, I can add to the Flash, ports and app store
The iPad 2 supports WiFi N on the 2.4ghz band only (as does the iPhone ...). The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is dual band ...
Not quite sure you're correct re band support, I run a 5ghz wifi LAN at home, my devices connect ok?
On the port part it would be good to provide examples of what you feel is missing in comparison to Android (remember this was never intended to be a fully fledge laptop) - most of what is needed is covered IMO with cables (HDMI, VGA, USB / camera); full vehicle integration, etc.
The app store I can agree is a slight inconvenience at first not of Apple's making to be honest - guilt goes to our dear Gov and the music / movie industry. Bwana gave you an easy option for full access to the AppStore using your credit card I.e. register your account in Kenya (they accept the international game rating system unlike our Gov) or the alternative US account which although more painful at first ito registering & buying gift cards, is the most complete i.e. Music, tv shows, movies, apps, books, etc.
I'll add the following:
- no WIFI sharing of mobile link without JB
- no widgets (although to honest I still see this as more of a gimmick than something really useful)
- no built in turn by turn gps
- gmail integration is incomplete vs Android
- no built in performance monitor / battery consumption history
- No easy switch on/off of wifi, Bluetooth, cell, etc. with JB you load an app called SBSettings which takes away this pain.
- Consolidating hundreds of apps is painful re you move 1 at time...
Honestly I could go on for a while on the things I'd like them to fix, but in honesty there are more positives than negatives, hence the popularity of device.
... And btw don't get me started on my android device negatives (yes there are quite a lot, but as with anything there are positives too)
If you'd ask me which device family would be the best for a 1st time user or person with limited computer knowledge, I'd recommend the iPad re price in SA (cheaper than galaxy tab or Xoom, the rest aside from maybe Sony are crap IMO) and also in terms of the quality of the apps, stability of the OS vs Android Honeycomb, and simplicity.
Of course for a real techy I'd prefer to discuss openly the pros and cons of each, and then leave the decision up to them. Ultimately both devices can be substantially modded once they are either rooted or jb'd. The fact that android is opensource btw would never come into the discussion, because I'm pretty sure there are not many if any users in SA that could make sense from the code let alone make custom mods.
