I agree... There are times like this where Apple's design decisions make absolutely no sense, hence my Android comment. Ah well at least in time we can fall back on JB for this. Really hoping they release an untethered one soon.
I'm starting to think that the untethered JB is a myth, when iOS 5 betas started coming out every dev and his mother claimed to have a jb but didn't want to release it as apple might fix the whole before releasing iOS 5. iOS 5 has been released and the mythical jb is nowhere to be seen...

Any good?been with CellC and you gan go from 5mb/s to nada in two blocks, also not very big fans of clouds in my area, knocks my speeds quite a bit

I had Cell C as well ...

I got it December 2010 (Randpark Ridge) and it was awesome until mid April 2011 - when it simply crashed. I'm talking from 3mbps to >56k which made it unusable. I complained daily and after 4 weeks of pretty much zero service, I used my Vodacom SIM again and sold off the Cell C because I wasn't going to continue wasting money.

I moved house a few months ago (Northriding) and now Vodacom has zero signal. I had 4 contracts and nothing worked ... and they still charge me for them. They've promised installation of a booster - but nothing as yet.

I had little choice but 8ta and it's pretty decent here. I find the position of the modem makes a huge difference - but I get on average between 2-3mbps - with peaks around 5mbps. Best of all is the R199.00 ;)

EDIT : If you read the Vodacom section, you'll notice I hate them. I had to cancel the data contract (1350.00 penalty) and I have another two contracts (500.00 together) that I can do zip with, due to the signal issues. They've sent someone over and confirmed the lack of signal ... but nothing since. Since I've moved I've paid them R4,000.0o+ with no service and I'm locked this other 500.00pm ... and needing to get the 8ta contact at 200.00pm.

hehe I've got the sweetspot marked on the desk at college, hoping one of my friends will take the plundge first and get a h8ta stick so I can see what its like on the move. Going to be using the iPad mostly at random locations.

Too true...

In the past some have been more difficult to break than others; longest I had to wait was +- 4 months, tethered options were available much sooner though. Apple of course wants to keep this door shut i.e. to keep iOS legally inline, to secure developer confidence and secure iTunes revenue...

Cellc seems to have gone downhill since Lars left... They appear now to be focused on profits at the risk of customer experience -- hopefully they're, for those on the data bundles (like me), not following the Neotel approach too closely...

IMO:

Pros: huge App market... better than android market at the moment. And that's what any tablet needs...apps.

cons: unable to hook up USB devices directly.
unable to easily access device via computer without apple programs
no flash ( not a killer unless you watch sites that don't user newer H.624 or want to browse SARS efiling :) )
No expandable memory.

I'm a professional who needs a library on the go for research and I found that my Acer Iconia A500 rocks with its USB port but sadly my friends Ipad just has better apps for what we need to do with the device.

End of the day I went with android cos... cheaper and can connect my external HDD on the fly.

Hope this helps.

I know its one way (HDD->IPAD), but its better than nothing. You can carry all your movies, photos etc on this and access it from your ipad. you can go up to 1tb. I have just bought an IPAD2 after using a galaxy tab. I hate itunes as well, but I hate Androids stability as much as itunes. You hardly ever have issue with IOS. Phone freezing, apps closing, reboots etc.

Seriously don't bother with a local account but rather setup an US account from the get go...

Here's how. Not difficult, not so illegal afaik :o and well worth the effort... :p

Thanks.

I'm not too concerned with the legalities - I remember doing all this with a hacked or pirated version of items, I just hoped I wouldn't need to with a genuine unit through the SA disti's! But I guess I'll have to

Yea - they went down in Randpark Ridge before Lars went.

I have horrible luck with cellular companies though. Vodacom plummeted so badly over a period of a year, that using Cell C was a breathe of fresh air ... it was how the internet was supposed to be.

When Cell C stopped and I jumped back to Vodacom, things were great there now! In 4 months they'd turned their technical issues around (though - still needed to sort out the pricing ...)

Now at this house - only 8km away - they're absolutely dead. I'm thankful in a way, as they forced me to use the better provider in the area

BTW - Am I able to make see a list of offerings in both US and SA store? Could I set up an account now before the unit arrives - so I can see? Does the store differentiate between iPhone and iPad apps? I know that's an issue that Android have ...

I think you can browse the itunes store via itunes or the apple website, without having an account.

Just make a US account and buy vouchers from evopoints.

I used Church street and Beverly Hills 90210 as my address.

I might be doing it wrong in your view, but that is it, its your personal view, not mine. I dont listen to my music as one hit wonders with Genius created playlists. I listen to Albums as a whole and for that using my directory structure of already managed albums works great.

yeah and? so do I.... I've been an audiogeek since the 90's winamp 1.x era  and waiting 8 hours to convert one album to 128k mp3s :D, I managed my folders by myself even with the first releases of iTunes but since I moved my music over to my mac in 2007 I let iTunes manage my folders and never looked back since then, I have 100's of albums and it's easier to organize everything with iTunes, as a windows user yes... with different media players managing things differently I was stuck doing things manually.

While we're on the topic of disadvantages, I can add to the Flash, ports and app store ;)

The iPad 2 supports WiFi N on the 2.4ghz band only (as does the iPhone ...). The Samsung Galaxy 10.1 is dual band ...

Not quite sure you're correct re band support, I run a 5ghz wifi LAN at home, my devices connect ok?

On the port part it would be good to provide examples of what you feel is missing in comparison to Android (remember this was never intended to be a fully fledge laptop) - most of what is needed is covered IMO with cables (HDMI, VGA, USB / camera); full vehicle integration, etc.

The app store I can agree is a slight inconvenience at first not of Apple's making to be honest - guilt goes to our dear Gov and the music / movie industry. Bwana gave you an easy option for full access to the AppStore using your credit card I.e. register your account in Kenya (they accept the international game rating system unlike our Gov) or the alternative US account which although more painful at first ito registering & buying gift cards, is the most complete i.e. Music, tv shows, movies, apps, books, etc.

I'll add the following:
- no WIFI sharing of mobile link without JB
- no widgets (although to honest I still see this as more of a gimmick than something really useful)
- no built in turn by turn gps
- gmail integration is incomplete vs Android
- no built in performance monitor / battery consumption history
- No easy switch on/off of wifi, Bluetooth, cell, etc. with JB you load an app called SBSettings which takes away this pain.
- Consolidating hundreds of apps is painful re you move 1 at time...

Honestly I could go on for a while on the things I'd like them to fix, but in honesty there are more positives than negatives, hence the popularity of device.

... And btw don't get me started on my android device negatives (yes there are quite a lot, but as with anything there are positives too)

If you'd ask me which device family would be the best for a 1st time user or person with limited computer knowledge, I'd recommend the iPad re price in SA (cheaper than galaxy tab or Xoom, the rest aside from maybe Sony are crap IMO) and also in terms of the quality of the apps, stability of the OS vs Android Honeycomb, and simplicity.

Of course for a real techy I'd prefer to discuss openly the pros and cons of each, and then leave the decision up to them. Ultimately both devices can be substantially modded once they are either rooted or jb'd. The fact that android is opensource btw would never come into the discussion, because I'm pretty sure there are not many if any users in SA that could make sense from the code let alone make custom mods.

Download hog ;) I found for me 2gb was more than sufficient.. At home my business WiMAX link does most of the heavy lifting... This is jokes aside one of the areas that I'd suggest jailbreaking the iPad, ie to share your internal sim via wifi - otherwise you are going to find it difficult to consume your data bundle.

My wife uses the net more than you. She burns through a gb a day without a single illegal download

Oh you're right - some sites say both, while others say only 2.4ghz ....

Interesting.

I wonder if there is different hardware according to region?

Hope for your bank balance sake you have an unlimited account.

My WiMAX link is fortunately unlimited, as I stream all my tv live fron the US including movies, plus I don't hold back on the downloads, Thank goodness I never have to keep track of my usage.

Prior to this I used to burn through +-20gb pm (more than 2 years ago)

I still believe the iPad 2 is too expensive. I hope the Amazon Kindle takes over the market.
