Welcome to the club, the iPad will assimilate and convert you quickly :D

I remember when the first one came out, I remeber arguing with bwana and co about how pointless the thing was... well I stand corrected, it's an awesome little device. It could do with Flash and a browsable file system like Android but it other than that it does exactly what it needs to do perfectly.

"... something decent" ... like what?

... well - like a better tablet - so pretty much most on the market.

Right now I think the Samsung Galaxy but it could change in 12 months.

Splashtop is quite an effective way to remotely use your desktops native browser on the iPad.

Yep i know how you feel that ****tyness just doesn't seem to change with every new apple release they continue the same old ****tyness

Thing is the iPad has potential - but it's all purposely locked down.

It seems the first thing one must do when they open their iPad is hack and crack to open more functionality, Then, they need to hop onto Google and get a fake address/account - to open more functionality.

I've heard now that Steve gone, they could be a little more lenient on the next iPad and allow to be more open from the start.

The problem is that it cannot do what I need it to do. :p I need to be able to browse the files on an USB flashdisk. I cannot do that with the iPad. It's a pity, because the device really seems like a nice little tablet.

Except for the app store lock down.

I thought the main disadvantage from the Flash - but this app store thing is a bother too. Is anything on the web locked down or only available to US or something?+

You can, using the iPhone camera kit..

Nope that doesn't do it for me. With my current setup I can lie in bed, and want to watch a documentary that sits on my hdd connected to a non windows machine (media player). And if I don't like it, stop it and play another file, no need to copy data across.

Are you working under the illusion that you can't do this from an ipad because you can, very easily in fact.

You call it piracy I call it sharing, I did that even back in 80's. You never heard of sharing an LP/DVD/Tape/Book to a friend? But lets not start the whole piracy war as its been done to death now as everyone has their view.

On the Subject of Jailbreak yes you can copy media onto the device to take to someone so you have to do it with intent. The problem is that you still have issues with consuming the media on the device itself, as iOS applications dont like sharing between each other. Example If you download music and I am referring to legal bought mp3s outside of iTunes, you can not simply add them to your existing playlists without visiting a PC.

As to why I do that, I prefer to support musicians directly instead of giving money to the middle man.
Point I'm trying tO prove is that if you are going to use it for that jailbreak it. I don't get me wrong, I enjoy my sharing and share my stuff aswell. Poeple bitch about not being able to do this but have too much of a conscience at the same time to support jailbreaking.

Slightly off topic but I think incredible connection sells some wifi/Bluetooth hdd that can come in handy, not just for iPads but for all tablets. Anyone know something about this? Would be cool if the iPad can interact with this hdd

It does and you can quite easily... Just do a restore of the stock software..

I had the same point of view regarding my Nokia N8 and custom firmware, but then the device froze on me to a point where I couldn't get any life from it. What I mean is that with Murphy around, the problem I experience will be such that I cannot do a restore of the stock firmware: i.e. the power button will break. It is a bit too expensive for me to take chances with.

Transformer running Windows 8 ;)

Sounds like a winner yes. As it stands now the iPad is as good as it gets out of the box so looking for "something decent" may take a while :)
