iPad 2 disadvantages

Is it made by Apple? Not? Well then chances are... you know the rest

... something tells me the Samsung Galaxy, HTC Flyer, Motorolla Xoom, BB Playbook and pretty much everything else can though

I had the same point of view regarding my Nokia N8 and custom firmware, but then the device froze on me to a point where I couldn't get any life from it. What I mean is that with Murphy around, the problem I experience will be such that I cannot do a restore of the stock firmware: i.e. the power button will break. It is a bit too expensive for me to take chances with.

As hard as I've tried I've failed to brick an iDevice. Of course there risks involved but I am yet to hear of anyone who had a warranty claim refuted on the basis of a jailbreak. If there were a catastrophic hardware failure the procedure would be to replace the faulty component and do a firmware restore which would eliminate all traces of a jailbreak..

Why did you order something you've already decided isn't what you want? This is why I suggested cancelling the order.

Thing is the iPad has potential - but it's all purposely locked down.

It seems the first thing one must do when they open their iPad is hack and crack to open more functionality, Then, they need to hop onto Google and get a fake address/account - to open more functionality.

I've heard now that Steve gone, they could be a little more lenient on the next iPad and allow to be more open from the start.
Sounds to me like an awful lot of baseless negativity. I own both an iPad2 + Galaxy Tab 10.1 and can honestly tell you the grass is not greener on the other side.

You have 2 options; return the iPad or start asking for constructive advice about how to set up your iPad.

If the measure of a tablets usefulness is by flash (primarily adverts) or its ability to pirate paid apps then you are best suited to the Android world or jailbreaking.

The iTunes store restrictions are there as a result of South African Game rating restrictions (they expect every game to be rated locally at a cost of +-R5000 ie they refuse to accept the international rating system most other countries accept, so not Apple's fault) & the music / video restrictions are due to regional licensing restrictions; the local music industries have tied up these licenses and they make it difficult / if not impossible for any new entrants.

Ito a solution for the apps, bwana has pointed you to the Kenya store ie register as if you are in Kenya and then you can use your SA credit card to purchase app content similar to the US store, alternative is that you register a US account and buy iTunes gift cards.

Btw I wouldn't hold my breath on the more lenient now that Steve Jobs is gone angle. Apple like Amazon are companies that respect the rights of the artist (app, music, video, etc). This by the way is why the iTunes store is so successful vs the failure of Google app store. Yes as I said I own a galaxy tab and I can honestly say the Google store is not all that good / a little closer to terrible. Imo the best Android app store is run by Amazon re they run it on a model which is a little closer to Apple.

Ag no man don't be silly i was referring to any instance where you want to copy YOUR LEGALLY BOUGHT movie or song to any other device be it a laptop, PC, media player or anything really to enjoy at your convenience whether it be on a bigger screen, projector, friends house or with the kids at a party.

Apple has some serious brain washing going on if their users believe that to be piracy! Does apple want you to buy the same song or movie on every device you own only to be consumed on that specific device for your eyes only? :wtf:

Btw i'm not making these things up i have apple devices which i never use cause they're such a burden.
How is what you say any different to burning a CD/DVD copy for your friends? The music, movie and software industries have consistently stated that this is piracy.

Restrictions have nothing to do with ITunes or Apple, like Amazon they choose to run their businesses within the legal trade framework and that's why their devices restrict mechanisms that could facilitate piracy.

FYI the only way they could in most cases secure the content was to guarantee that they would make it difficult for people to pirate; google tried to play a different game with google tv and was shut down.

Similarly if they want music in the cloud they will have to follow the rules of the industry and also keep in mind that the reason why Google's app store is not as good is due to the high level of piracy their platform affords.

Are you working under the illusion that you can't do this from an ipad because you can, very easily in fact.
You are correct, that is why I am asking. The links provided by sandman doesnt quite do it?

It's cheap. It's on special.

I want a Porsche too - but right now I have a Volvo because I can't afford a Porsche. I point out errors and mistakes in the Volvo too - but it'll do for now. Just like the iPad - it has flaws, but it'll do until I can upgrade

That's what I plan to do ; ask how to hack, crack, lie and cheat it into thinking I'm elsewhere so that it behaves like most other tablets. It's just a pain - that's all

EDIT : The thread started on questions btw - as I don't have the iPad yet. I'm not sure what to expect and - on the flash issue - there are different views.

IMO:

Pros: huge App market... better than android market at the moment. And that's what any tablet needs...apps.

cons: unable to hook up USB devices directly.
unable to easily access device via computer without apple programs
no flash ( not a killer unless you watch sites that don't user newer H.624 or want to browse SARS efiling :) )
No expandable memory.

I'm a professional who needs a library on the go for research and I found that my Acer Iconia A500 rocks with its USB port but sadly my friends Ipad just has better apps for what we need to do with the device.

End of the day I went with android cos... cheaper and can connect my external HDD on the fly.

Hope this helps.

Dolby, the way you are going about this before you've even given the iPad a fair go tells me it stands no chance in hell to impress you. You may be better of not spending that money and keep it untill you find the device you actually want. This might be a cool special but no special is worth taking advantage of when you don't actually want the item. Go get that Android tablet you've set your heart on.

Dolby, if you are already the type who pirates movies, music, and pc software, you can get many of the apps via http://apptrackr.org after jailbreaking. You don't have to use the iTunes store if you don't want to.

Initially, pirate the apps to try them out, and once you have seen the lay of the land support your favorite app devs by buying their apps via the Kenya method. Its really isn't an issue, the Kenya method will only take 5 minutes to setup.

ASUS Eee Pad quad core + Windows 8... Now we talking :)

Honeycomb applications is really lagging behind, and I dont see an improvement coming soon, hell even Google dont focus apps on the device

Google+ and all the other Google apps are mostly aimed at phones.

Google+ works great on my Galaxy Tab. I use it for all the pictures I take (the google+ app on android has that insta upload function that I find really useful). I have the old small screen tab (around the size of a big book), and its just what I want. A bigger tab does not fit into a jacket pocket. I wanted something I could use easily at airports and while travelling. Also, the bigger tabs are horrible to read e-books. After about 2 hours of reading in bed my arms feel like lead.

Im thinking of getting a bigger pad for home though. Something for the coffee table and for around the house and for everyone to use. Since my droid tablet is attached to my gmail account its not something I can share with others.

Quite the contrary. Low expectations means more likely to be impressed.

Just need to get over this aversion to iTunes. Personally I don't get it.

The process of jailbreaking is incredibly simple, far easier then I recall rooting my desire was.

No. I'm quite interested what Dolby makes of the iPad once he gets down and dirty with it.

Its become a pointless discussion, clearly you should not waste your money on something you don't like. Your responses are appearing to border on trolling...

We'll forget the time I accidentally clicked 'iTunes to manage your music' and it messed everything up!

But the main thing is the 'watch folder' I'm sure if I'm doing it wrong or if it doesn't have the feature - but a 'watch folder' is pretty crucial. It should auto sync the library to the folder constantly - if I add 10 albums, they should automatically appear. If I delete, they should remove from the library.

Right ow I add - for example 10 albums - to the folder and add each folder manually. I have to remember the 10 I've added (or write them down) - otherwise it won't make it the the library and get lost in 30,000+ tunes.

The times I have forgot to add and can't remember, I need to delete the entire library and restart. With gapless info and my 3 year old computer, this is an entire day process.

IS there a 'watch' or auto sync?

Ah - now there's the true Apple reply ;) I was wondering when one would join the thread! Everyone else seems to be have been helpful with links and answers - but occasionally you get someone that won't hear of a flaw i there 'i' ecosystem. Flash? Don't need it! iTunes? Love it! 3G? Why? USB2? Outdated! Bluray? Use a HDD! Region locks? Hack!

Tell you what, when I get it I'll refrain from saying anything negative and only praise it to please you and your people. I'll ask questions in the Off Topic to get non-bias answers

The iTunes Library itself is the "watch folder". Stop trying to outsmart it. Let it copy files to its own database and let it manage things. You concentrate on getting the metadata in there and iTunes will sort it for you. If you then delete a song, iTunes will politely ask if you just want to delete only the database entry or if the file should be trashed too. NB: You delete it from iTunes, not from your file manager. Apple is spending a lot of effort on making the file manager obsolete.

You cannot manage your songs manually and use iTunes merely as a front-end. Well, you can, but that is not what it was designed for. Let iTunes do what it was designed to do and it will perform flawlessly.

So just set up a smart playlist. Something like the last 100 songs added.

And that there is the very reason why I hate iTunes with a passion, because my media is on a NAS. Itunes just can not handle it when media is not on the PC the software is installed on.

I store my media off my Computer as I dual boot into Linux(No iTunes support) and Windows

I've also taken the FNB deal. There seems to be so many restrictions with the iPad and it seems like there are two groups of people. The ones that need external hdd connectivity and the others that don't mind using a workaround. Luckily, I'm on the fence, I don't need it but it would be nice. To be honest, I've looked at the features and it fills my needs with very very few shortfalls. FNB has made it affordable to me. I will buy it. It really is that simple.

OP - You could always put it on sale for R500 less and pay fnb ;)

Dolby, some of your remarka confuse me. Why do you keep bringing up 3G and bluray? You do know that the model has 3G. The obvious reason why they have models without 3G, is for people like me who dont need it. Have wifi at home and work. Why pay extra for a connection I'm never going to use.

As for flash. Boohoo. Rather thank Apple for trying to advance technology on the net a bit. With HTML5 and CCS3.0, flash is going to be used less and less real soon. I hate .flv and always prefer .mp4 streams for their better quality. Just have a look in your system resources next time you are on a flash website to see how much your browser is using, thanks to the resource hungry flash. I'd rather have a faster device with a longer battery life, than outdated flash. If the sites you want to stream from, are still only serving up videos in flash. You should rather blame them than Apple. Times are changing, flv is old news and needs to go the way of IE6. The sooner it dies, the better.

And why on earth would you want bluray on your tablet?

Unless you are referring to bluray on a MacBook or something.
