Any questions about it being on contract?
I bought my phone off Carbonite so not sure if it's contract or not.
Will they be able to check with the IMEI / Serial no?
Nope. They just inspected the physical device.

When doing the assessment do they remove your screen protector etc?

Any tips to get the rate offered on the site in store?

Would it matter if the phone is on contract?

@Bryn / @phlux
The only way a contract could be relevant is if the phone is carrier locked.

Their diagnostics tool is extremely thorough. The chance it isn't running the IMEI on their system is zero. And the physical inspection is also surprisingly impressive - they had a special light and magnifying glass when inspecting mine. The screen protector was removed during the inspection.

Initially, I was docked a huge amount off the trade-in for having an almost invisible scratch (a few mm long) on the one edge. I think it went from R20k to R16k. I pushed back gently and the guy offered full trade-in after consulting with the store manager. Clearly, their max trade-in is intended for devices in 100% flawless condition. How mine acquired a scratch is a mystery, as I bought it brand new and it was in Apple's own transparent case from day one.

That would be pretty unusual. I could clearly see the trade-in wizard the guy was running through and it needed the results of their diagnostic tool.

Thanks @Bryn

Is there a validity period given to accept their offer?

Or

Is it take it or leave it and if you decide you want to take up the offer (within a day or two )another test will need to be done?

I just want to be fully prepared hence all the questions.

Bruh, just go to the store and find out

They won't bite you

So slight echo, as long as the device isnt carrier locked, you are golden.

I think I was "lucky" as a trainee evaluated the device. No magnifying glass or special light. They did remove the screen protector though, during which the guy did break it unfortunately, but they offered a replacement at no cost to me.

With regards to the offer, I assume it is a take it or leave it. From their side, imagine you go and drop the device and the camera breaks, something gets lose etc, so they would need to test it again.

All in all, it took about 20 minutes from start to finish.

My impression was that it was an offer valid in the moment only. I assume if I returned even later the same day that the inspection process would be done again from scratch. After all, the device could pick up damage in between.

To prepare for a trade-in is no different than preparing for a new phone.
  • Backup your Google Authenticator codes
  • Backup WhatsApp
  • Ensure all files and images are in the cloud
  • Screenshot your home screens if you aren't going to restore the entire phone
  • Don't factory reset until you've accepted the trade-in offer
  • Oh, and make sure you have the phone's original box and all its contents.

So I've got a practical tip: if you need to insure your iPhone 14 Pro Max, get a quote from Naked.

This is not an advert lol. I requested a quote first from Auto & General (my car insurer), who offered R480/month. I almost choked.

Then I downloaded the Pineapple app ... all those billboards must have forced them to raise their prices, because they offered me like R850/month.

I then turned to my former insurer, Discovery Insure, and they wanted R680/month.

Tried Naked ... got R232/month offer (excess of R3000/month and replacement value of R31000)... for now I've purchased that. I can always move, but for now I don't think I'll beat that.

What's your experience/premium?
I have my M1 Pro 16" MacBook Pro, iPhone 14 Pro Max and AirPods Max insured through Naked. Their rates are epic. Costs very little for a lot of peace of mind, specifically for scenarios where my stuff is stolen or broken when I'm not at home.

Backup your Google Authenticator codes

Man, twice now I’ve forgotten to do this, and it’s a huge PITA. Now I’ve switched to Authy that allows you to save a backup in the cloud.

Since I discovered that 1Password has 2FA built-in, I've switched everything over to it and enabled 2FA wherever provided. So much more convenient than a dedicated app.

MrMobile review of the iPhone 14 Pro

Respected Tuber & Android lover MrMobile is extremely impartial & mentions (what most of us thought) that generally Apps run on iPhone better than on Android phones. He gives examples.

(Will not be engaging with a certain fella on this point).

Yea I should probably use that instead. 1Password is a life saver.

Regarding trade in, was at the iStore yesterday wanting to know how much I’d get for my 11 PM 256GB. They offered 12k on the spot. But that offer was valid right there and then. You have to give the phone to them there. Obviously I didn’t wanna walk without a phone as they didn’t have stock of iPhone I wanted.

I would then just take that 12k, and then pay the difference for a 14 PM 128GB. Luckily I will still get 15% of back of the difference in eBucks.

Does 1Password backup the codes also?

I’m split between MS Authenticator and Google’s one

Mr.Mobile is without a doubt one of my favourites, his “into the fold” and “when phones were fun” series are amazing, a true mobile nerd.
He’s also very pedantic about software experience and UX in general.

His point about Notifications is so damn true even for my work stuff, my iPad Pro, iPhone and Apple Watch all get my work emails (Office 365) first before my work laptop that is literally plugged into the office LAN, LOL!

Apple definitely has its flaws with iPhone (iOS 16 bugs amongst many), but I have to say the software experience for me on iOS has been unrivalled, especially after having used Androids for over 10 years as my main device. I hit copy on my iPad Pro and hit paste on my iPhone and boom transferred over effortlessly like they are one device, lol. The ecosystem is disgustingly good, though I think Apple need to take a chill pill on adding more new features.

2023 we need Apple to simply focus on continuing to clean up iOS and iPad OS 16, lol, no new major release!!!
We no longer need yearly iOS updates, we need longer timelines between the major releases and better refinement of the existing releases, so more point releases. Come 2023 release iOS/iPad OS 16.5, bring iOS 17 in 2024.
This yearly major update release thing is getting long in the tooth now, it feels like the developers are having a tough time keeping up.
