iPhone 14, US version which comes with eSIM only in SA?

Hi all

Heading says it all, will the iPhone 14 sold in the USA which only supports a eSIM work on SA networks?

I know Vodacom recently announced eSIM support for all customers including prepaid, not sure about MTN. A friend who's currently in the US wants to buy himself a 14 if it will work here.
 
Jumping on this thread... I have family coming out from the US soon and they tell me they have the iPhone 14, so I'm assuming they can only use eSims. This is something I know nothing about since my phone doesn't take an eSim. From what I've read, getting an eSim from one of our major networks is difficult, and ideally I'd like them to be able to land in SA, turn their phone on and be connected via their local eSim. I see companies like Airalo and Maya offer eSim packages for SA. Would this be the way to go for them? To arrange it online with one of these companies ahead of time?

Airalo will work for them. Roams on Vodacom if memory serves. Set it up a few hours before they leave and turn off the sim. Turn it on when they land

Yes for Airalo. But just a heads up, I used Truphone more than Airalo as they are usually cheaper depending on destination, but last month I loaded a 5gb plan for Europe, they took the money, never got the data, no answer from support, nothing. Maybe they have gone belly up.

So Airalo it is from now on.

Had a similar issue with Truphone which is why I switched to Airalo. Haven’t had any issues except it activating the eSIM I got an error once.

Ah, so obviously it was not just me and there is an issue with Truphone. Good to know, thanks.

And as a heads up to anyone, after Truphone never activated when I landed, I needed data so activated the Vodacom 1gb and 100 minutes for R199. At the hotel I got a low data message and thought wtf, next thing I got a 'bundle renewed' message as my data had run out and they do automatic renewal. By the time I navigated to the Vodacom app I was down at a couple hundred Mb already so turned off auto renewal and went with Airalo.

I was fuming, gawd knows why this happened but as I said, I'll stick with Airalo in the future. They also have a much wider choice of country and were the only ones who I saw who did Belize for example. Maybe it's worth the extra $ or two knowing it works without issue.
