iOS 17 + iCloud seem to be causing a lot of this with certain 3rd apps as well. I updated my WhatsApp the other day to the new version with this newer UI and it began doing a full backup after the update. My 15 Pro Max got pretty warm and I was wondering why until I checked WhatsApp and saw the backup taking place, it usually does these while plugged in and charging at night, shortly after the backup was complete the phone went back to being cool again.Wireless power bank charging makes my 14 heat up and it’s not even 45 degrees outside yet.
Between iOS 17 and Meta, there seems to be a lot of crap going on in the background.
Years ago there was a similar issue to this with the Facebook app on Android along with Google Play Services, both would cause the phone to max out the CPU over certain period and then suddenly stop after a short period.
My observation is that iOS 17 seems to be less strict on how apps run in the background (even if Background App Refresh is off). I experienced the same thing when I updated my 13 Pro Max to iOS 17.
Hopefully iOS 17.2 brings an end to all of this, some apps, particularly the Meta apps like WhatsApp and Facebook seem to be running a little rampant, along with some first party iOS apps, I have seen people complain about heat after using Safari and Notes for a short time and that makes me suspect iCloud is also a culprit.
