Aaah.

From what I can gather is that the sRGB that Apple keynote marketing referred to was an increase in saturation which would bring it to around 70%-75% of the NTSC sRGB colour gamut, using an outdated 1930 / 1951 NTSC gamut standard. sRGB is used mainly in the middle segment consumer devices / displays / printers etc.

Again... an improvement from Apple but not the yardstick to measures other by as Apple would want us to believe.

But the screen on iPhone5 still looks like the best QUALITY display on the market. It's got what, 50% higher contrast over the 4S? That was already a superbly high contrast screen. The videos I've seen show it to be immediately brighter, warmer and more vivid. It displays the full sRGB gamut which means it displays colours that your pitiful simian eyeballs can't even see.

Edit: I will update with links once I am off tablet and on laptop again.

Edit... here one linky... http://dot-color.com/tag/color-gamut/ and 'nuther .. http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/tutorials/sRGB-AdobeRGB1998.htm

No, it's not the NTSC standard, it's web standard sRGB.
Some info.

It's not about colour saturation so much as web standardisation.

But... I'm far from an expert on this, I'm just interested in it. The end result is that it most likely has the highest colour reproduction of any smartphone on the market. (unless it can be shown otherwise I'm happy to see)

I guess it depends on which website you believe and which version of the SGSIII they used for the benchmark. GSMarena doesn't agree with you there.

I did say real benchmarks. Geekbench doesn't works so well for erm... apples to apples comparisons across OS's. Sunspider and other in-app benchies will do a better job of showing end-user performance and feel.

Well, even Sunspider is getting old...

Ok I'll caveat that statement and wait for a proper suite of conclusive tests.

Wireless charging? Heard of the PowerMat?

I'll give Nokia PureView, they certainly are making much better cameras than phones these days.

And how often do you have gloves on while typing? If I was in Serbia this would be the phone for me.

I ride bike, and use fuelly when filling up- and I can use my nexus, with bike gloves on. Just a random chirp... :)

Also, I really don't see what the iHype is about :erm:

Reading all this it comes down to which stats you want to quote. I agree, wait till an unbiased review comes out.

We need a new run of http://www.displaymate.com/Mobile_Brightness_ShootOut_2.htm

With Nokia 920/iPhone 5/SGS3 if you ask me.

Yep a comparison of the 3 phones would be great.
However if I were to choose right now, it would be the SIII.
When the Nokia 920 comes out, it would be a serious contender, but the ecosystem is a concern.

Well the ecosystem will only be a concern for a month or 2 at most, esp seeing that the Phone and PC's would share the same Kernel and even some applications. App development is also a breeze when compared to other environments.

Agreed. Ok at least one can say... it keeps pace with anything else. I'll go a bit further and say that due to iOS's efficiency (which is due to its limitation of resources like backgrounding) it'll end up feeling faster.

Screenwise... Amoled just isn't there for me. It can't do whites properly. Blacks are great, vivid colours, but whites are always this weird eggshell hue.

That's wishful thinking. App devs must buy-in. App buy-in is dependent on market penetration. Market penetration is dependent on app stores. Microsoft is fighting a serious battle here. Our Lumia 610 is barren of apps atm.

It is? maybe you forgot the link to the app store... here let me help you http://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/new-apps

That said Windows Phone 8 vs Windows Phone 7.* is totally different. Older phones do not have even half of the new API's and was very limiting in what you could do with the device. Unlike the new kernel where you can write apps that directly link into the camera and other hardware example you can load one from within the camera application for extra features.

You just don't get any less patronising do you?

Well that's nice... but still you can have the best API's and SDK's in the world but it can remain a wasteland. Put it this way - will you now commit valuable team members in your little nurturing startup to commit to Symbian development, if Symbian put out a stunning new API?

I'm not saying WP8 won't be great - i hope it really is - but 2-3 months to catch up with Play Store and iOS App Store ain't going to happen.

So can I appeal to all of you you write some constructive stuff whenever the Android/Apple/BBM/WM/other? thing comes up?

Yep unlike the original article which stated:

The iPhone 5 is the best smartphone ever

and the reason:

it just is!!!
