iPhone 5 prices from Vodacom

Prices are wrong, in paying R999 once off for my 16GB iPhone 5 on the Talk 500 with Vodacom.

Vodacom has pay-in and pay-off deals on most of its contracts (depending on the device, of course). Pay-in prices were unfortunately not listed on the Vodacom site.

To be fair, I probably wouldn't have listed them as it would have made the table even more unwieldy than it is now.

Four months left on my Vodacom contract... I'm sitting on my hands 'till April, then I'll be porting to cell c or 8ta and get the phone from them, end of story.

And then you will be probably waiting it out for the rumored iPhone 5s... I will wait till the Feb Apple event and hope to see if the 5s is coming out in June or not... Nothing wrong with my iPhone 4 at the moment...

That's the thing... Nothing wrong with my 4S either, I'm just don't think I want to go the VC route anymore.

Don't see the price on Business Call - I'm paying R279/month for my iPhone 4 with no minutes and 110MB data. Hope I can get something similar when I upgrade in the New Year.

I was paying R379 with R275 worth of airtime and 110MB. Not sure why the package pricing changes each time a new one is released.

There's always a lot of hype at launch, so maybe VC are just hoping to cash in, and then hopefully they'll drop their prices after a couple of months.

They pay off deals as stated above.
You pay your subscription and an additional hardware fee.

I'm paying R999 once off, if I choose one of the listed prices I'd pay R960 a month.
R800 for the package and then R160 hardware fee over 24 months which will be R3840

I'm in the same boat, called VC and they said you can't re-new Business Call contracts anymore.

My total bill currently comes to about R600 p/m with MyMeg 175 Adv so opted for a Smart Standard @ R499 with 16GB iPhone 5. The 130 anytime & 60 weekend minutes should cover my calls & the 300MB my phone data, so should drop my bill with a phone thrown in.

If I need extra data for my iPad (via hotspot) will add MyMeg 400 which will also drop the OOB rate, see ... http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/490174-Smart-MyMeg-Advanced-What-OOB-Rate

What I mean is when the iPhone 4 was released, the hardware fee was only R140 with no pay-in. A TopUp 275 was for R379 (R275 subscription + R140 hardware fee).

The closest one here, the TopUp315 is for R619 meaning the hardware fee is R304. So why is it suddenly so much more expensive?

Who the hell even uses SMS any more, I think I get about 100 free every month, every time I check my account they have accumulated to the MAX!

I do. Many people use plain phones without Whatsapp capabilities incl my housemate, oldest sister and my mother ...

Delivery is usually faster and guaranteed.

Well duh

I read all of these comments and I wonder how a lot of you come to your conclusions. Here is my (more intelligent) reply to all of you. Firstly, how can you compare a pricing plan from two years back with a new one? Ever heard of inflation and the exchange rate? If inflation of 6% per annum over two years gets added to a contract pricing of lets say R399 two years ago it will increase to R448.32 per month. And now you ask why they can't repeat that same contract fee. For two years your fee did not increase at all. How can you expect the same fee?

Another thing. The iPhone 5's hardware is more robust and it costs more to make an iPhone than it did with previous generations. More R&D was incorporated to bring us a better phone. And now also the pre-order pricing suggested around R11 000 for the 16Gb between Sept 21 and Dec. The current pricing suggests about R8 700 for the 16Gb. Not even taking inflation into account on the cost of the phone, how can you expect a better and more expensive phone to cost the same as a previous version.

That being said, I expected worse when it came to the pre-order pricing to be released from Vodacom. I was pretty impressed with the startup pricing plans and I'm hoping to get my iPhone 5 with Smart Standard for R499 this coming Friday.

With R109 pm for the phone I'm paying R2 616 for the phone (interest free and inflation free) and I'm getting 130 minutes anytime (let's say a minute costs R1.70 on average = R221 benefit), 60 more on weekends (Voda-Voda @ R1.65 pm = R99 benefit), 300mb data (in bundle @ R0.25 p/mb = R75 benefit) and 300 sms's (R0.60 on average peak vs. off peak = R180 benefit). All in all after being conservative I get a R575 benefit for which I pay R390 per month and I get a brilliant phone for R2 616.

Sold.

And I have a 4mb uncapped at home and a 2Gb(+2Gb) cap on my tablet with which I could set up a Wifi network any place any time to help me out with my 300mb data. I can also buy another data bundle mid-month to help me out when needed. Rather be smart about it, than going with the other sheep to get your S3.

I welcome your (hopefully intelligent) comments and replies.:)

I think the iphone 5 price was unchanged frm previous devices, the inflation u talk about is for vodacoms profit keeping up with south african inflation. Exchange rates increased but expected value, instead of meaningless ripoffs. I use iphone for its bandwidth (Lte)capabilities not so much for talk time, if I'm desperate then vodacom is last option!
