iPhone 6 smashes pre-order records

By those criteria, nearly every high end Android phone released in the last year and a half is an upgrade.

By any criteria actually :erm: Seeing as they are, actually, an upgrade. But that iPhone6 is quite a beautiful looking bit of kit. And it does take some pretty serious steps forward from the 5s in the aspects of size, weight, thinness, camera and screen quality. Seems early benchmarks are a disappointment but how much do you think your friend cares about that, honestly?

I think that extends to the average smartphone user - they simply buy the phone they like as long as it satisfies their needs. It is only a small unfortunately vocal minority who froth at the mouth about such things. Maybe some of them are able to extract maximum output from their devices, maybe they're just bored basement dwelling geeks.

Virtually everyone on MyBB is pretty technically competent so we will meet many spec obsessed people.

But the techies (and I am an old one) dont realise how much of a tiny and insignificant minority we are. (I am sorry to call you all insignificant.... but you are)

People see things in the newspaper, listen to the news and buy a phone.
They dont change the ROM. They dont know what specs it has. They dont care.
And that goes for both the average Android user as well as the average iPhone user

Techies should also be smart enough to to know that more and faster cores dont translate directly to a fast or smoother user experience
Neither does more MP in camera mean better pictures

The car analogy works
- The power output of the engine doesnt determine the acceleration or the top speed.
- It even less doesnt determine the speed and smoothness it rides around corners (i.e. normal use of a car)

Unfortunately her blind love of all things Apple has stopped her from considering other potential upgrades. The problem is her and many others like her follow the trend of:

10 September - OMG why would I ever want a phone bigger than a 5S? This is the perfect size, anything larger just wouldn't work.
11 September - OMG larger phones are just the BEST thing ever! My only problem now will be choosing between a 6 and a 6+! I mean the 6 is like the perfect size and EXACTLY what a phone should be, but then again the 6+ is bettererer!

I have a question that speaks to the rabid Android chaps.

When the S5 came out there was a thread that had very few negative iPhone posters.
They generally didnt bother.
Why should they?

The iPhone 6 has been announced. Almost no one sensible has even touched one (outside of Apple and their partners.)
Yet the rabid chaps are out in force thrusting specs down our throats ... not that they mean anything on their own.
NFC - Android had it years ago grunt grunt -...they dont mention that you couldnt load your credit card and make a secure payment at a store.
The accusation is that Apple user are only responding to marketing and fashion.
How they think they know this is beyond me.

Did it occur to you chaps that both Android and Apple users make rational choices for their requirements?
I know I do. Apple makes sense for what my family needs.
Me I will probably get the 6 because that size slides into my jeans pocket fine.
I lost my iPhone 5 so I am using my daughters iPhone 4.
It will be quite an upgrade

I have tested Android devices (and some Microsoft ones.)
For my family's needs Apple works best.
They are rational choices.
I am technically able but I factor that out when slecting because my family are all on the same eco system.

Having said that I reckon there is very little to choose between each eco-system and premium phone.
However if one has become used to an eco-system it makes very little sense to change (and I say that any any direction from any eco-system (unless its BB)

I suspect that her thought processes didn't involve the screen size at all, or any kind of technical specification. She probably couldn't tell how much ram was in the respective devices. She might however be able to tell you how they looked, and which phone was the most attractive. And she might be able to tell you about the fact that the 5s had the fingerprint sensor, which made it a killer upgrade over the 5. And even if you sat with her for days and let her try every alternative device, I'm not sure you would ever have convinced her otherwise, because ultimately she values a completely different spectrum of qualities in a device than you do. And you know something, if I had to buy a new car, I care so little for vehicles that I'd end up infuriating a car enthusiast because I just wouldn't care about half the specs they rave on about; I actually just want something that looks nice, and doesn't give me any troubles. And moreover, I also suspect that in your fixation on specs, you miss some of the most crucial areas of real technical expertise where the iPhone is still such ahead of other phones on the market. I love my G2, honestly I do, but it doesn't have a shade on the iPhone6 in terms of physical appeal.

It's not that hard to dodge the rumour mill, but I get your point about everyone on the same ecosystem, I experience it with cameras. I can't possibly buy a Nikon body now after investing a small fortune in Canon lenses that aren't compatible. My SO bought her Nikon body ages ago and now can't tap into my collection of gear. So as you can imagine we're replacing the Nikon body with a Canon one so that we're all on the same system. Not really the same extreme as iOS versus Android, but I do get it.

Right, now that that's out of the way.

She values the known, the fashionable, I get that. But in an age of information, ignorance is a choice. It doesn't mean I'm going to go out and try to convert the iSheeple to the temple of Android, but I am going to sit by, laugh and point at them as they rave about a device that has come a year or two too late.

FWIW appearance is subjective, and if that's your strongest argument then you're just driving my point home. Bring up the look & feel, the usability, the lack of fragmentation (which is less of an issue now, but anyway) and then yes, we can discuss pros and cons for iOS and Android. But, if you're saying "iPhone 6 is teh pretty, therefore it is teh best" then prepare to be branded an iSheeple.

I have owned every iPhone since the 3G and I buy the new model every year. Since buying my first Apple product which was the 15" PowerBook G4 in 2006 (the following year I got the Black MacBook and I was labelled a fool) I can honestly say that I don't consider anything else for personal computing and no man will convince me otherwise. Not only are their products world class, their customer service is second to none especially when purchasing iCare +.

I always kept a BlackBerry around as a secondary device but I've since stopped.

People who use Apple products need to stop apologising. We were labelled buffoons and fools then and we will continue to be but we were right then and we're right now even with all doom mongering. 4 Million units in 24 hours is proof enough.
