iPhone 6 smashes pre-order records

It's impossible to put PDFs on my iPad or songs on my iPod without it. Horrid experience, every time.

I can't comment on the songs to iPod bit since I don't have one but believe me when I suggest using "I don't know how to" instead of "It's impossible" - even without having to install third party apps.

I don't agree with you.

The core functionality of the OS is still the same across all devices. Certain features are removed simply because older devices cannot support them, and it would compromise performance. It's similar to a vehicle manufacturer releasing a car with different spec levels- they are still the the same model of car.

Or, running Windows 7 on a Pentium 4 with all the settings set to max. Sure, it works, but it's not very usable. Scaling down the effects leads to a different looking variant of the same OS, minus features that your older hardware simply cannot support at an acceptable manner.

Either it was a dud or you're doing something wrong. I don't know of anyone who had any issues with a pure Android device besides yourself and cerebus. It's no co-incidence

The 1st gen Nexus tab I had was just junk, especially compared to the iPad3. The 2nd gen wasn't bad at all - actually a nice solid device, but after going to the Mini retina it wasn't much of a comparison. Not having to resize my screen for maps in Kingdom Rush: Frontiers or deal with missing graphical artifacts in other games I'd paid for due to chipset compatibility, or hunt down audio codecs for videos was quite a relief. But I guess that's the curse of constantly looking for reasons to criticize Android.

Name it differently?

A version of software implies it is the same version in total. Imagine every release of a new software version you had to Google to see what you gain or lack compared to other versions? It's pointless having a version number at all if everyone has different flavours and features at every release. Just call it iOS rather.

Or do what they have done since the dawn of time and limit a device :

Sony X1 goes to 4.0
Sony Z goes to 4.1
Sony Z1 goes to 4.3
Sony Z2 goes to 4.5

The build quality was shocking - but ...for the price people are willing to overlook that. I'm one of the legions that had to deal with the lifting screen issue. So you're right I guess - it was a [-]Nexus[/-] dud.

You know what happened the first time I connected my nexus to my laptop… nothing. I had to download an app, Android File Transfer, from google before I could do anything. Unfortunately that app made my computer unusable.

You can blame Apple for not supporting MTP.

So because Apple decides not to support an otherwise widely-supported standard, Google needs to come to the party? That's ridiculous.

Try emailing yourself the file. I find it works with ePubs - you can download it to your bookcase (or what ever that reading app is called) might work with pdfs too.

Every ipsw has its own unique reference number according to the device it supports. Actually makes finding the right version for your particular device quite complicated if you doing a direct restore via a manually downloaded ipsw.

If you doing an OTA update, which I suspect most people do, is there a need for any other reference than the version of iOS being updated to??

That's an even more ham-fisted way of doing it. And the PDFs are generally larger than mailbox limits.

Couldn't seem to import docs from my dropbox to the bookcase at the time, but I've moved onto the galaxy tab since then.

I use dropbox but assuming you'd rather not involve the cloud and don't want to email the pdf to yourself… can you create a web server on windows? you can navigate the contents though a web browser on the iPad.

Now I know I said earlier without third party solutions but apps like Goodreader make it ever simpler - plus do a whole lot more.

We had exactly this problem with HD family videos, ipad is useless at getting the video stored on the device for offline viewing.

I'll ask anyone in my office what they run and it'll be a unanimous iOS7. I guarantee you that each each think they have the same experience and features because, well, they all run version 7 - right? Just a few pages back a poster he didn't know that - and the majority actually don't

I agree with you on the OTA upgrade - drop the version number and simply have a 'new' iOS for OTA. But they're deliberately misleading because that was an an issue with Android.

As bwana mentioned you can tranfer files via your web browser and http protocol...

I think Dropbox works fairly well for that as well.

Goodreader looks decent, but how does the actual file transfer work? I see it has usb transfer (Would that not be through iTunes then?) and Wifi transfer. Would that then be through a web server like ComicFlow uses?

These are quite complicated compared to the Android method. Plug in, copy paste, done. Seamless, as they say.
