What is your obsession with height. Surely when measuring the size of a button it is better to use height x width?

All of Mail's formatting/editing is done through tapping. You're new to the iOS system (and to a larger degree, the Apple (and OS X) way), and intuition does not necessarily come right in the beginning.

If it's only begun to bug you now, I can't see it being much of an issue.

You can always use a different app.

Or go back to Android...?

The native mail apps on some of the Androids are horrendous. In fact you probably used a separate app for email.

You were the first to use that measurement (2 pixels, remember?) I'm not going to change the measurement I've been using as a comparison because some "hysterical Hettie" changes his mind about what he wrote...

Anyway, enough now, you can go and look for your next HUGE issue, it's getting tiresome now.

You claimed 2 pixels, that's a height on the screen, you changed your mind and claimed you didn't really mean it, remember?

But anyway, I heard that someone at Foxconn cried yesterday because they broke a fingernail, you might want to get worked up into hysterics about that as well.

You know pixels go both ways right... How did you know I was talking vertical pixels. Again you are being pedantic by taking obvious exaggeration seriously.

Let's just take the "2 pixels thick" hyperbole as hyperbole.
 
Its pretty tough going from android to ios, I had many wtf moments when I wondered why some things were so counter intuitive.
You get used to it though and it works fine when you understand the general theme in which things work.

It honestly seemed like a step backwards when I came from android but I like ios now and Im quite comfortable with it.

Tapping white space is simply not intuitive that's my mere point. It just goes against HCI principles. Its not a deal breaker for sure. Hardly worth the debate.

Android has got nothing to do with this.

I know, I really hate the built in email client in my Galaxy S5, it is probably the worst stock app I've seen, I rather forward my email to gmail when I'm at work and using my S5.

It's not just tapping white space though. It's the same principle for any app to modify text etc. For example tapping anywhere in the text field box in any message. It's how iOS works. By default this text box is one character-tall. The same dimensions/area where one taps in Mail and elsewhere (with several character-tall text fields) as per my explanation about tapping to the right of the cursor.

They would have far more criticisms than iOS Mail.

I think there are two reasons for this...

File attachments are new, so it's an afterthought.

Secondly iPhones have traditionally had tiny screens, there simply wasn't screen real estate to add permanent buttons for this functionality.

Ok, possibly a 3rd... Jony Ive is all about minimalism.

I'm a long time Apple and iOS user but their method for attaching files in the mail app is inexcusable. It's just not discoverable... Bad design is bad design. I don't care who is responsible for it.

That said, we should be thankful because for the longest while we weren't able to attach files using the mail app which made replies with attachments impossible. Back then you'd have to remember in which app the document was stored and navigate over there to open the share sheet and start an email from scratch.

So, progress has been made.

We need to also differentiate between pictures and attachments. Pictures have always been attachable, which would make up the majority of what people are attaching.

Obviously the ability to add other attachments with iCloud Drive is welcomed for those who need them who would otherwise have had to use third party apps in the past.

I think I've sent one PDF with iMessage.

Pictures were never always attachable. That function came with iOS 6 or 7, think it was 6.

You'd have to mail pictures from the photos app or copy and paste from the photos app to the mail app. Attaching anything in mail has always been a convoluted mess. It's just inexcusable as far as I'm concerned especially since Apple has openly gone after the corporate market.

Yes, it was 6. A long time ago (and moot). Since then there can't have been issues with attaching pics.

No issues using third party apps for attachments either.

Of course, Apple leaves us with very high expectations, and it is now here with its native app.

I think we can nearly stop moaning about it. :)

No, go use the Outlook app and see how mail should be done. Apple UI/UX has been a disgrace this year, from Apple Music to the way you can't get rid of the crap stock icons on the Apple Watch.
