iPhone appeal slipping

Apple has a fantastic ecosystem ito accessories ... no argument about that. But watch the sparks fly when the new pin connector comes out with the new iPhone.

My biggest need is not for a Marantz hi-fi with a special dedicated iPhone/Pod dock. My need is for my devices to talk through standard ports to as many things as possible. I need a simple thing like sticking a USB thumb drive or SD card into my device and be able to move things any direction to any folder I want. A small adapter I connect to my SGT10.1 allows me to do exactly that. It has 3 USB ports, normal and micro SD Card readers, etc. Thát is what matters to me and thát is where i-Whatever fails.

Any USB memory stick from any person with anything on it can be stuck into my SGT10.1 or Note right now moving any content to any folder. That is what mobile computing is about.

And Apple will never ALLOW you to do that because THEY SAY SO.

Sneakernet is what mobile computing is about?

Self-quoting FTW.

USB memory sticks are so 2006. I thought everyone used Dropbox, Google Drive etc?? I have the same files available to me on any device and any platform everywhere, and they can easily be shared.

Or you could use a cloud storage service like dropbox, etc and never have to worry about lugging cables, adapters and usb sticks everywhere... justsaying

Cloud services cost big money for large and frequent transfers.

And you can transfer anything to anywhere on your iPad with that (both directions to any folder)? Or just add photos to the album as per the camera connection kit?

Can you - for example - on your iPad watch a movie stored on one of those cards stuck into that card reader/hub?

Not really when you're on WIFI. Certainly all my docs/images and music are easily managed like this. The only thing I ever need to plug a cable in for on my tablet is if I'm copying movies and that would generally be off a laptop anyway.

WTF are you transferring?

The cloud is probably sufficient for 95% of users (probably more). I'm not surprised that Apple doesn't try to cater for 100% of users. The cloud is where it's at, USB memory sticks not so much.

It's not really something I ever wanted to do. I have my PC for that. I do love being able to use USB Storage mode on my Android phones, that's one big + that Android has over iPhone, oh great BeVonk the Self-Referencing..

Not on Wi-Fi no, but then you must make sure you have all moved to where it should be when leaving the Wi-Fi area. I'm often not near my Wi-Fi. The pain with iOS for me is then also the lack of a central file system where I can create my own folders and move stuff as/where I like and use any suitable app to open the file. With Android I have a central file depository where I can place stuff (and move stuff around) and play any file from a range of app options it will present when I tap on the file. Like Windows.
