I dont have much to contribute to this thread but Im with V3G.
Why would vodacom delay the iphone launch? Im sure they are trying to release it ASAP...
Well then why are dates being throwed around all over the place - is it supposed to create Hype?
If someone told me they were gonna buy me some gift "in two weeks", and told me that week after week, month after month...well, you know - you would just get sick of all the BS and move on...
Yes, but surely Vodacom could have been more communicative about the fact that they could not give a date due to non-disclosure agreements[1]?All dates "thrown around" did NOT come from Vodacom. Nor did Vodacom ever made a statement such as "in two weeks" or whatever.
All the dates you ever heard or saw published came from the web including forums such as this one where forumites speculated on dates (and pricing!).
Read through all the threads on th the subject and you'll quickly pick it up; one forumite posts his or her personal views on dates or pricing and the next minute it's gospel and triggers a massive debate.
And while you're reading through all those threads, notice how often I posted this, i.e. there is no date yet published for the release of the 3G iPhone.
Answer me this; If the iPhone is the next BIG thing and everyone is waiting with baited breath for it to be released, with their (or 'there' for Adriaan) money ready, why on earth would Vodacom not have released it yet?

Forgive me if you were shouting this from the roof-tops and I missed it. Many of us certainly got the impression that the release date was imminent now for the last 2 months, even if we paid no attention to the speculation by individual forumites with their release dates guesstimates and iPhone pricing.
Edit:
[1] Unless there was an NDA on the NDA?
Vodacom seemed quite happy to let the hype build about imminent arrival of the iPhone and adding fuel to the fire with that stupid pre-registration page on the Vodacom site.
But still no idea on the price or did I miss it?
I must say that I am also not even considering getting the iPhone. Vodacom mentioned that there may be some test units for reviews – luckily we have a few guys dead keen to write about it (I think Steven is one of themIt's junk!! The GEN 1 phone was good, the GEN 2 phone is a absolute disaster. The two main things for me is that you cannot use the GPS with anything other than apple proprietary software and it cannot be used as a modem for your laptop or desktop!
Busy trying to get the hype up to the max? Who the hell knows. Only Vodacom top execs know and it looks like we are going to get screwed once again.Answer me this; If the iPhone is the next BIG thing and everyone is waiting with baited breath for it to be released, with their (or 'there' for Adriaan) money ready, why on earth would Vodacom not have released it yet?
No they just take orders first to see how well they may do and then release the phone months later.Something you'll notice about press releases from Vodacom (compared to other mobile operators), is that Vodacom typically launch a product and then put out a press release to the fact, where others love to put out a press release and then start figuring out how to actually get the product out. (Think 3G, HSDPA, UPA, etc.)
While I don't always agree with it, this is the way Vodacom has been doing product releases since day 1.
So, as already stated, the impression that the phone was 'imminent' was due to overzealous journos, bloggers, posters, etc. But not from Vodacom.
You're not far off on the NDA comment.![]()

Vodacom mentioned that there may be some test units for reviews – luckily we have a few guys dead keen to write about it (I think Steven is one of them) otherwise I would not have even accepted a trial phone… I have heard many guys raving about the iPhone, and when I see them a few weeks later they use their Blackberry, Nokia Smartphone or HTC.
But is certainly the ‘coolest’ phone out there: “It can do basically everything, except make calls” as the Vodacom CEO said![]()
