Hehehe - I wondered how long it would take an educated (read TopGear fan) person to pick up on that on. The smiley emoticon with shades was the closest I could find to the Stig in his helmet.
Anyways - jokes aside - I think I should explain myself. I started this thread to debate whether the iPhone is a Smartphone despite all the stuff that is missing from it as highlighted by die GSM Arena review.
The finding so far is that yes - it is a Smartphone according to some people. As no clear measure exist to define a Smartphone you end up with a situation where one persons Smartphone is another person’s "dumbphone".
Also, I am not a fanboi of anything. I hate fanbois. Yes, I love AMD and always buy AMD based PCs - but I will not dis Intel simply because it is not AMD. If someone asks me about an Intel PC they want to buy I will give them advice on what Intel PC will work for them. Besides, Core2 is pretty sweet.
Same goes for cell phones. Sure, I have had Nokias for almost 10 years now and I will only use Nokia, but if someone talks to me about an SE or Samsung I will not play it down as crap just because it is not a Nokia. If it weren’t for them then Nokia would be crap because it would not have good competition.
The only reason I am going off about the iPhone is
1) apple fanbois (well apple to begin with – I hate apple – but that’s personal so it is out)
2) too much hype (really I am sick of hearing of the iPhone, rather make some iDust from it)
3) the price (see my love of apple in point 1)
4) and this is what flipped me into ANTI-mode : the severe lack of everyday features that makes smart people question the Smartphone tag being added to the iPhone
But - that is my stance on things (and those that agree with me). If you want an iPhone, sure go and get it - and if you are a fanboi - enjoy it, I suppose you have the right to be a fanboi. Just keep in mind there are people like me that will pounce on you and having a neutered product like the iPhone in your bag-o-ammo is gonna make it so much easier for me

Dude I was as anti as you are (if not more so - seriously search back through some of my posts).
BUT I like trying out new tech/ interfaces / hardware so despite all of my antiness the touchscreen beckoned.
On that basis I imported a 1st gen and have been using it for a few months now. I can tell you the it is the best phone / gadget / device that I have ever used ...for anything.
I have had every kind of phone including your precious Symbian / Nokia and WinMo (k-jam) and I can tell you that none of those even compares to the fluidity of the metaphors at play on the iPhone, see: what youre missing is the elegant simplicity of the interface, youre focused on the details and those things evaporate in the experience as a whole.
Add to that the fact that the engineering and build quality makes every other phone out there look like it comes out of a lucky packet...
I suppose what I am trying to say is: try it... then talk, if you still are not convinced then at least your protestations come from a POV of experience as opposed to hearsay.
BTW: I can listen to music, surf the web and if a call comes through the music fades back if I answer the call the music dies, when the call ends the music fades back in... all of this while I am still surfing, all of this without lag or resetting (winMo I'm talking to YOU!) - does that qualify as a multitasking experience?
So you are beholden to certain companies and their products even if there are better, cheaper alternatives? That's pretty much the definition of fanboy, is it not?

Just as fruit people will buy fruit products (like computers, phones, music players) I will buy certain products from certain brands. Everyone does that.
The difference is a fanboy is one that is not open to reason and blindly believes in whatever it is they are zealotting for. I know there are better products than the ones I use and I am open for dicsussion on that. A fanboy is not (dare I say your name comes to mind

I agree that the iPhone is not a smartphone (I reasd that GSMArena article some time ago - before the 3g came out) its something completely new that does have some things other devices dont and vice versa but also does defy the current classifications.
I think your multitasking issue is a similar thing, you see: Apple has approached the problem in a different way to WinMO.
In WinMo no app ever closes really, anything you open stays in memory - the thinking being that it is then quicker to 'open' the next time you want to use it. True, until you have more than 3 or 4 apps cloggin up memory at which point the device becomes unuseable and in the worst case scenario forces you to perform a dirty reset (this happned several times a week on my k-jam, it was HUGELY frustrating).
On iPhone they have taken the approach of making apps open one at a time, very quickly (in about the time it would take to switch from app to app in WinMo) and to save the state of each app on close - the result is the same (if not faster) functionality without the degradation over time that you have in WinMo.
Fruit or no fruit - the logic and in fact the empirical evidence of the superiority of this approach cannot be denied, so, true: technically it is not multitasking in the Windows definition of the word but the user experience is the same... actually better which kinda tears the ass outta your argument.
Copy and paste - rather annoying I'll concur but I'll also add that phone numbers in texts or online are tappable and will be dialed outright - so where the WinMo user must copy and paste the number into the dialler the iPhone user mereley taps the number to dial it, same with emailed / texted URLs. This does greatly reduce the need for copy/paste.

I love my iTouch its the best multimedia device on the market its not a phone though so the iPhone is then the best multimedia phone out there but id say the worst "smart-phone"Out of simple curiosity, why exactly is it that you hate about Apple so much? I've been through P900's to TyTn1/2's to E90's... Let me tell you that when it comes to simplicity mixed with multitasking (Surfing, listening to music and taking a phone call, with no freezing/restarting (the normal Windows crap) ) there is nothing that comes close to the Mac OS platform.
Like it has been mentioned in many posts before, I myself too hated the Apple brand. But once I happened to try its OS out, I kid you not I have not used a Windows-based machine/device in over a year!
So don't go dissing us Apple fanboi's now...

-iPhone has fixed this problem, every game has it's "Own" controls.
*Racing - Use Motion Sensors in a steering wheel like fashion
*Point and click - use finger on touch screen
*Buttons? the programmer simply creates his own buttons onscreen, how many needed, at any size/color/etc.. - i have seen the gameboy emu on the iPhone, it looks like a real gameboy, with buttons and everything! (There is no nokia that could look like a gameboy even if it wanted to!)

I never realized that is how Windows Mobile did things. The apple way of doing things sounds a lot like the nokiaOS (Series 40) way. I must admit the N82 is my first time on the Symbian (Series 60) swing and I have never ran out of memory. Yeah I know the phone has 128MBs of it - but still.... Luckily on Symbian when you close an app it releases all resources the threads of the app had open.
I have noticed a bit of a speed bump when you have the browser open in the background, while playing mp3s and the GPS software (particularly Garmin Mobile XT) also running in the background and you then take a picture and try to mail it or MMS it. But I guess portable multimedia computers are still in their infant stages so we should see where the N-series (and iPhone for that matter) evolves to.
