iPhone pricing speculation

contract prices as follows:

Talk120 - includes 120 anytime voice minutes + 100 sms + 250mb data @ R2189 pay in for 8gig or R3299 for 16 gig. Total cost R450 p/m (you can finance the pay in @ R109 additional per month 8gig or for the 16gig R149 p/m)

Talk240 - includes 240 anytime voice minutes + 100 sms + 250mb data @ R2189 pay in for 8gig, R3299 for 16gig. Total cost R595 pm (finance deal extra R104 pm for the 8gig or R164pm for the 16 gig)

Talk500 - includes 500 anytime voice minutes + 100 sms + 250mb data @ R1799 pay in on 8gig, R2899 on 16gig, (finance deal extra R74 pm for the 8gig or R144 for the R16gig)

Cash price as listed above, but don't bet on getting this price, as it works out to a 3% markup for the reseller. With all the work involved in the activation - dunno if they will agree to this price.

who else is also considering outright purchase coz anything over 6000 is way too steep. Oh and who knows if visual voicemail will work

Order outright buy on quoted price of aprox. R5500 @ Dion Wired

As I said, the email said R6389 8 gig or R7569 16 gig... but this works out to a 3% markup, so unless we get an email stating that Vodacom will support this price to at least 10% it is not sustainable. There is a hell of alot of work involved in the activation process, not to mention commission earning staff, and our normal markup is between 10% and 25%.

So don't expect to pay this price unless you are at Vodaworld (Vodacom owned stores). Doesn't make business sense... They may release info about support tomorrow, so hold thumbs.

The R 5500 is the price of an outright purchase, no contract, and I am going to pissed of if the guy lied to me.

Cost prices were released on 19th Sept, so he could have guessed it would not sell at that price which would be below cost, however, selling prices were only sent out at 6pm this evening, so I think he was thumb sucking...

I put my name on a waiting list at Dion Wired, which is why the SMSed me.

Full text is...

Get the fone of the future 2day! Apple iPhone 3G launching Fri 26 Sep @Dion Wired! 8Gig R6389, 1gig (sic) R7569. Doors open @ 9am - don't be l8!

Wow. A whole R230 profit on a phone! What's the bet nobody has stock of cash phones, only contract one's...??? Crazy pricing!

As per my blog post today, I called up ourt local Vodashop and was quoted the following for purchase of a prepaid iphone 3G:
* R7695.00 - 8 gig * R9120.00 - 16 gig

A huge rip off if you ask me, but hey no one asked me.. lol

The price is for the Garden Route Area and usually its more expensive in our area so expect it to be a bit cheaper elsewhere.

not sure if I am allowed to link to the blog post where I quote these prices but hey here goes: http://blog.fring.com/southafrica/i...he-iphone-3g-finally-arrives-in-south-africa/

Lets hope linking isnt against the terms, just thought it good to back up my price quote.

That would be at the normal markup of 25%... however, this seems to have been waivered for the GRAND apple entrance. So they didn't lie, just assumed they would make the normal margin on this phone. Iphone hype = zero profit. Not going to go down well with resellers!

Those contract prices are a huge jump fromt the standard contract prices. Does a person have to upgrade to the "iPhone" version of their Talk package?

Nope, but I would assume that then your pay in would be different. The shops can all create their own deals, but you would probably find that these would be the best and cheapest, if you are going to use data.
