iPhone pricing speculation

The prepaid phones will not need any activation I assume, since they are all unlocked... well know soon enough

aPPLE IPHONE prices

Excuse the question from a brand new nooB, but how come the iphone is $199 in the USA and R9000 here? $199 x R8 per dollar comes to R1600 odd, plus transport, profit, wharra wharra - shouldn't the price be somewhere around R2000 for a bare-no contract phone???

$200 (or $300) in the USA is on a contract, pay in. Just like here.
Their contracts are a bit cheaper than ours, but still the same.
It is not $200 for the phone without a contract. We are still paying a lot here (and our contracts are stupidly explensive Vodacom!) but the difference in prices aren't huge.

AT&T are actualy subsidising the cost of the iPhone when they sell it in America. Hence the increase in contract costs for them.
